The Tempest
The Tempest is a sea north of Xuslon, east of Akraphis, and south of the Northern Expanse. It is connected to both the Verlam Sea and the Deuridian Ocean.
History
The Tempest is a remnant of the Age of Elements, when the world was still young and the elementals from the different planes ran rampant, killing off the creations of the Celestials in a rampage.
A raging storm, the Tempest is frequently avoided by travelers whenever possible, as more than one ship has been lost to the churning water and deluges of water raining from the sky. At the center, a swirling vortex marks the Precipt Rift and Thalatesh.
During the Titanic Era, a group of Water Genasi descended from the original water elementals that plagued the world in the Age of Elements discovered the rift -- or, rather, rediscovered. They saw the different monsters that were able to pour through the portal to the Elemental Plane of Water, and, seeking to defend their new home, fought them back until they were able to surround the rift. Channeling their magic together, they mostly closed the rift, though they were unable to completely remove it from the material world. As such, they made it their duty to defend the rift with their lives, frequently traveling from the mainland to the rift in order to ensure that it was not reopened.
With the weakening of the rift, the storm that endlessly raged over the sea waned as well, though it was still a never ending, powerful hurricane.
Thousands of years of this dance passed, the Genasi traveling back and forth and keeping up their defenses. Finally, they grew tired of the journey and instead created their own underwater society at the location of the rift, allowing them to stay there year round and slay any beasts that made their way through. Over time, more and more people heard of the budding city and traveled to it. At the eye of the storm, however, they are not able to see that the Tempest is steadily growing larger as the rift begins to reopen itself.
