Gates of Gruumsh

The Gates of Gruumsh, called Gruumsh Zogak by the orcs who inhabit the Swamps of Urshok, are the primary entry point from the rest of the continent of Xuslon to the Swamps of Urshok. They are named after the One-Eyed orc god who has guided the tribes for millennia.   The gates themselves run from the mountains of Athasor's Rise to the coastline with the Deuridian Ocean. They consist of stone and wood walls with a crank operated central gate made of iron that lifts vertically to allow entry or exit, and the gate can only be opened from the inside. A watchtower sits at either side of the gate, as well as against the mountain and at the coastline, each of which is manned by a group of orcs operating a ballista. The coastal tower is larger with two additional ballistae that point towards the ocean to help protect the gates from the sea. It is constantly guarded by a contingency of no fewer than three dozen orcs.   Since their inception, the gates have been protected and operated by the Gruumsh Zogak Tribe, and it is how the tribe got its name (See Swamps of Urshok for more information about the tribe).   Despite their rather plain and ancient appearance, the gates have stood the test of time and so far never let an intruder into the Swamps. Their most recent tests include the Hyperion Empire's aggression during their rapid expansion in the Celestial Age and the demon incursion from The Burning Wastes leading up to Pelor's Reckoning.   The gates are also the primary method of trade with the orc tribes of Urshok, though the number of merchants has been steadily declining as the Hyperion Empire attempts to put certain sanctions and the like on the tribes.
