The Imperium Vulcanalia
The Imperium Vulcanalia is a Dwarven empire that stretches from the Vulcan Peninsula in the west to the fringes of the Great Grass Sea in the east. In less than five hundred years the Imperium has grown from a small cluster of Dwarven kingdoms deep beneath the earth to conquerors of the entire world.
Ruled by an all powerful Emperor, the remnants of the Old Republic of Actium are still seen in the vocal Senate that offers guidance and advice to the reigning Emperor. Much of the governing of the Empire is delegated to these venerable Senators by the Emperor, but if any turn to rebellion they are quickly proscribed by the Emperor and put to death by a Praetorian, a corp of elite dwarven warriors who pledge loyalty only to the Emperor.
The strength of the Imperium is built on the backs of their Legions. Every free man in the Empire must join the Legions on their seventeenth birthday and serve for at least five years – or, if they are particularly unlucky, whenever their general’s campaign comes to an end. Legionaries earn a small pay, but gain immense wealth through treasure and slaves looted from the cities they conquer. Many legionaries can live the rest of their lives off the loot they horde during their time in the Legions.
Every city in the Imperium has a colosseum, and there is nothing the people of the Empire love more than watching the never-ending games. Gladiatorial bouts are fought nightly, exotic monsters are slain by great champions, criminals are put to death in many brutal ways, and slaves are fed to wild beasts. The greatest colosseums have even seen entire Legions fight pitched battles against their enslaved and defeated foes.
While slavery is common practice in the Imperium, the mistreatment of a non-goblin slave is a grave crime and may send the cruel slave master to the colosseum.
