Astral Dragon

The original dragons appeared in the early years of the world and were the first and most powerful sentient race in history. They named themselves Dragons and ruled when Loracis' inhabitants where only saurians and monsters. The "Astral" adjective was added long after their extinction, to differentiate them from their lesser descendants, the Metallic or Chromatic Dragons.   They didn't form any kind of social construct at first until the Muslin appeared. Some of them created the Kobolds by modifying Muslin individuals and created a host of servants. They banded together as rulers of all in what would be known as The First Empire. After they discovered Humans, they proceeded to create a myriad of races with either human as a basis or as a model. Elves, Ouran, Dragonborn, Orc, Dwarves, and a lot more. They were all subjects under the Astral Dragons ruling.   This led eventually to their demise, as a rebellion took place and the rebels used a connection with the Umbral plane to shatter the Astral Dragons into lesser versions of themselves, known today as Metallic or Chromatic Dragons.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Much like today's dragons, Astral Dragons where giant creatures covered in silvery iridescent scales. They had four legs and leathery wings on their backs, but they would often walk on their hind legs and stay upright for long periods of time, with their wings around their shoulders like capes. They had long legs and powerful, long jaws. Their heads were crowned by rows of long horns that curved pointing at the same spot above their heads, where a fluttering White Flame danced perpetually.

Genetics and Reproduction

Astral Dragons laid eggs, like their descendants do. They usually found secluded pockets of the Astral Plane to hide them in. During the long incubation period the egg shell would absorb the arcane winds of the Astral Plane and form the True Dragonheart within the dragon chick. Astral Dragons that didn't incubate in the Astral Plane were born magicless and flameless and were known as Dun Dragons. Blind and powerless, and with the amounts of food they would have to ingest to keep their enormous bodies without the magic to sustain them, these poor souls didn't survive for long.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Astral Dragons didn't need to eat or breathe. Their own True Dragonheart would keep their stamina and feed their bodies.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Astral Dragons could see into the Astral Plane, and didn't actually need to use light to see, but the magic radiance of their White Flame, bouncing back into their eyes, akin to magic echolocation. Their hearts hosted a special crystalline growth known as a True Dragonheart. This organ generated the astral energy for them to use arcane magic, siphoning it from the Astral Plane. Due to that, they didn't even need to eat or breathe, their magic sustained them.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

At first, they didn't need names. But once they had a proper organization, they started naming themselves. They used long phrases describing themselves, like "Discoverer of peoples" or "Father of Nine". They had their own language, and once other races convived with them, and they could not even speak the Astral Dragon's language, so they made approximations to what the actual names where. In this case, "Protector of the Meek" became "Bahamut", "Teacher of the Arts" became "Druuid", or "Peacemaker" became "Tiamat".

History

Astral Dragons appeared in Loracis 200 million years ago, at the zenith of the Saurians' reign on the world.   The first and most powerful sentient race in history, their intellectual, physical and arcane might are unparalleled. It's their belief that their own origin was an accident, as the eggs of a Saurian fell down a plane rift into the Astral Plane. There they were bombarded with magic and mutated into the first Astral Dragons, that came back to their origin world to rule it. The first Astral Dragons just lived in isolation or with their close families but abstained to form any kind of society.   Around 150 million years ago, the first Muslin appeared. Small mammals that knew how to use tools and had societies of their own. The Astral Dragons took interest in the little rodents, noticing how despite their meekness they thrived in a world full of enormous dinosaurs and menaces. They decided that it was them working as a collective that made them thrive, and the Astral Dragons imitated them. Seeing as the diminutive creatures had it very difficult, they decided to enhance them, creating the Kobolds, who would become the common people of The First Empire.   (To be Continued)

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

They see themselves as parents of all the sentient species that came after them.
