The Arvand Dominate gets its name from its founding culture, the Arvand, themselves of the Hậdrusay or 'White Alvar'. Three centuries earlier they were a minor power largely restricted to the northern coast of Panormus but under Tahalsnir the Red (2302-2319), their territory expanded to cover two thirds of the sub-continent and incorporating much of Ruthay, Khelametia and Mahadara.

Most modern historians dispute this figure but agree that the army fielded by the Gorshan Empire was one of the largest fielded in a thousand years and likely numbered in the mid-hundreds of thousands.

Modern historians estimate that the large majority of deaths were non-combat related and were instead a result of disease and physical exhaustion under slavery. At least 16,000 Gorshan prisoners of war were sacrificed to Koltansudur, the Arvand deity of fire.
