Sharks

Great red maw

The great red maw shark is one of the largest predatory sharks beneath Jordfold's myriad of oceans. Their name comes from the red colouration which starts darker from their head and becomes lighter around the dorsal and pectoral fins. Red maws have a reputation among seafarers and coastal communities of being savage man-eaters, though unprovoked deaths are rare.   Fully grown red maws prey on whales, often working in packs to bring down larger ones, giant turtles, colossal squid and smaller sharks. Juveniles eat fish, dolphins, seals, and rays. They have been known to attack fishing boats and larger vessels from beneath, possibly mistaking them for prey.   Their widespread distribution brings them into competition with other apex predators such as predatory whales and other large sharks. Cultures in northern Hebronia and eastern Pansole hunt them for their fins, while those in Sowande often worship them as ocean deities and protectors.   Average length, female: 9.7 meters or 31 feet, 9 inches   Average length, male: 8.5 meters or 27 feet, 10 inches   Average weight, female: 21.2 metric tons or 46,700 pounds   Average weight, males: 17.3 metric tons or 38,100 pounds

Shimmering cloaked death eater

Shimmering cloaked death eaters, or just 'shimmering cloak sharks', are a highly elusive apex predator found in warmer waters Hebronia, Sowande and Pansole. They prefer to hunt in the ocean, though have been known to frequent the Kynikean Sea where they have proven to be a menace to other sharks. Their success as predators is owed to their highly reflective scales which dazzle and confuse potential prey and threats alike. This tactic is especially effective closer to the surface because the sun can temporarily blind pursuers.   These sharks display a terryfying tendency to attack fishing vessels , though they tend to ignore the crews. It has been speculated by observers that shimmering cloaks do this because they see the boats themselves as rival predators invading their territory. Most deaths during these instances result from drowning, or falling into the water and being eaten by other sharks.   Average length, females: 6.1 meters or 20 feet, 1 inch   Average length, male: 5.5 meters or 18 feet, 2 inches

Thornback

The thornback prowls the coasts between Hebronia and Sowande, though they have occasionally been know to venture far up the Kynekian Sea between Hebronia and Pansole . The backs of their fins have little sharp bony growths which is where their name derivies from. The 'thorns' aid in reducing drag, allowing them to achieve greater speeds than larger sharks which often hunt them.   Thornbacks are responsible for a large number of attacks on people in large part because of their tendency to stay quite close to the coast and even swimming up rivers. Fierce competition with other predators that fill similiar ecological niches forces them to resort to unconvential behaviour, including brazen attacks on fishermen.   In the aftermath of these attacks, flotillas of harpooners set out to cull their numbers. Their prey consists of crabs, turtles, birds, dolphins, starfish, along with the rare crocodile, alligator and terrestrial mammal.   Average length, female: 2.4 meters or 7 feet, 8 inches   Average length, male: 2.2 meters or 7 feet, 2 inches
