Manticores

Much myth surrounds these massive scorpions, the most widespread claiming them to have the body of a lion and the face of man.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Manticores, despite the many stories told over the ages, do not have 'the body of a lion and the face of a man'. However, they do possess physical traits that can easily explain the misconceptions surrounding them. Manticores are gigantic scorpions, the largest specimens reaching the size of small horses.   Their carapace, particularly around the head, (cepholothorax) is covered in thick hairs, that range in colour from gold to oak brown. In many specimens, this somewhat resembles a lion's mane, so now we begin to understand where the mythology comes in. They have one other striking feature, a white pattern on their face which resembles a human skull.

Biological Traits

Females are considerably larger than males, and have darker hairs. The hairs grow thicker when they reach maturity (between 26 and 28 months). Baby manticores are white and almost translucent, the 'skull' pattern is not visible at this stage.

Genetics and Reproduction

Manticores reproduce sexually like most scorpions. Males take great care when approaching a potential mate less they startle them, which can often result in the female attacking and killing the male. Using their sensitive hairs to pick up vibrations and pheromones. As with all scorpions who reproduce this way, a courtship 'dance' will take place if the female has accepted the male.

Ecology and Habitats

Manticores occur in the Nur al-Rabe and Khemaui Deserts.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Juvenile manticores hunt rodents and lizards exclusively, using their deadly venom to liquidize the insides. Adult manticores however, are capable of bringing down larger prey and accounts of these massive scorpions ambushing camels or other beasts of burden are not uncommon, tearing them apart with their claws.

Additional Information

Domestication

Manticore ownership is heavily restricted as they are considered very dangerous. Where instances of ownership occur, the lifespan of the manticore is increased considerably, as long as they're cared for properly. They are often put to use in the 'guard dog' role and have ill temperaments, making them a poor pet choice for most.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Manticore venom is extracted as a lethal poison and is available in various black markets across Panormus. Their meat is a rich source of protein for nomadic tribes in the deserts.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The deserts of Nur al-Rabe and Khemaui

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Manticores are nocturnal creatures, meaning they only come out at night. Their eyes are extremely light sensitive and they actually navigate their surroundings by following the stars in the night sky. The hairs on their carapace, particularly around their claws, are also very sensitive.
