Drakes
Basic Information
Anatomy
Drakes are bipedal and unlike their wyvern or dragon relatives, don't have wings. Instead they have two stubby arms ending in four digits. Male drakes fight for the right to mate and are built rather robustly, but their powerfully built legs ensure they can build up a surprising burst of speed. There are variations between the different sub-species, but there's no mistaking them for any other creature.
Genetics and Reproduction
A male drake must seek out a female and entice her to mate, sometimes they can be appear to outside observers as 'pushy', which aggravates the female. Females being significantly larger than males, this behavior can have fatal consequences. Gestation periods differ depending on the sub-species, though on average, fall in the range of 5 months. After, the female lays a clutch of eggs in a suitable area and it can take a further 4 or 5 months for them to hatch.
Growth Rate & Stages
Juvenile
After they have hatched, drakes will spend the next few years dependent on their mothers. They're able to stand upright and walk almost immediately after birth and will stay close to their siblings for protection. They will spend most of the first year at the nest they were hatched in, unless their mothers decide for whatever reason the location is no longer suitable, in which case they'll move. Their mothers will spend most of the day hunting, most of the food is reserved for her young. After the first few years are over, the mother forces the juveniles to leave the nest. Typically, only a handful will have survived to this point, most having died of lack of food or eaten by predators.
Ecology and Habitats
Drakes prefer warm and humid environments.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Drakes are carnivores.
