World Ember: 50k Goal

I'm not much for Resolutions, but the new year is a refocus point regardless. I spent the first six days of 2024 setting out a publishing schedule for blog posts, content releases, etc as motivation and a guide. If I can see the things I need to get done, I can avoid stacking the bricks against my spine.

Heck of a lot easier to ask "do I have time for that?" when all I have to do is check.

That's the plan, anyway. 2024 is the year of emptying plates of long-term projects. Book of Revels & Ginnungagap are coming to an end (fewf and finally!), Psychopomp and Agapemache are on the horizon, as is the big boy. The giant. The true goal of 2024:

Finish everything else, so I have nothing but Emptiness at the Centre and Wax Wing on my plate.

Sprinkled in will be We Aren't Dead Yet episodes (one per week!) with my co-hosts Emily Armstrong & Dazzlikat, weekly writer's streams on Twitch, and monthly writer's development workshops (special hint: I use World Anvil's Manuscript software to write!).

Articles I'm Proud Of

Top Shelf: The One Shot

If you listen in to We Aren't Dead Yet (which if you don't, we'd love to have ya), you'd know I'm a total newborn to TTRPG's. I know net nothing that isn't learned through being around Dazz, WA streams, or listening to RPGDinosaurBob go at it with classic DnD motifs while he builds his own system. So, Top Shelf was a massive deal for me. My first foray into game making, and I learned an intense amount through the process. So, thanks to Dazz & Emily for helping me along the way, and thanks to the WA PDF which sat printed out on my desk with a mass of scribbles.

Book of Knowledge

Absolutely the article I spent the most time and brain-weight on this year, was Book of Knowledge, for the Companions challenge. I threw down with wry humour and fourth wall breaks, in a sincere attempt to break through the ceiling to the Premiere League. While I didn't succeed, I still love Book. I love the interplay between Karisma, Caleb, Book and even Icarus. And for Premiere League? There's always this year.

Ten Reading Articles

Gallopini by Emily Armstrong

Any massive musclebound lughead I get to name Alfredon and say has pasta for hair, while giving me Minotaur vibes? I'm here for it. I'm also here for Emily's consistent mastery of css, layout style, and her new, bespoke art style. My favourite new race on WA.

Neuromancy by Vazdimet

The Nervous System is absolutely integral to so much of how our bodies function, it was refreshing and fantastic to see the work done on Neuromancy, and how it wasn't a strict 'mind control' or play on William Gibson's Neuromancer. Let the healing begin.
Neuromancy
Technology / Science | Dec 23, 2023

A highly specialized branch of Curative Magic, Neuromancy uses techniques similar to those used in Fibramancy to strengthen and repair nerves.

Mimickyn by Dazzlikat

Mimics. Even with my only DnD based experience being Baldur's Gate 3, I still know the yikes inducing panic of a mimic. And now a playable race? It's pure fun, for everyone from the whole family, steamer trunk to the trinket boxes.

Gift-Wrapping Spell by KajetanWrites

While I judge spells for World Ember, I see such wonderful creativity from the WA community. Similar themes inevitably pop up, due to the nature of the game/s created for more combative environs. This? Isn't that. It's not about dealing death, damage or dampening the enemy. It's aeromancy to wrap paper around presents, and by mid-month, I kept going back to it, just to smile.

Floating Gardens of Azura by Chrispy_0

This article, while laid out beautifully with effortlessly good css, made me smile. Laugh. I genuinely enjoyed the banter in it, the story woven in with a floating garden full of fantastic elements and intriguing enemies. I really enjoyed this one.
Floating Gardens of Azura
Geographic Location | Dec 24, 2023

The Floating Gardens of Azure are a collection of floating islands in the middle of the Sands of Nessa. The Fairy Azura uses them to challenge people to make it to the top, with the promise of a wish if they do...

Winter Solstice Light Blessing by Ninne124

Koselig defined, I want to see the village knitters make warm sweaters and scarves for the occasion, see the festive foods and drinks, and watch the lights. Solstice does trend to need light (especially when you're in the Northern Places of the World like myself), and this made me want to read more and see what the original Fae v Townsfolk hullabaloo was about.

Tradition / Ritual | Dec 23, 2023

A ceremony to cast a warding spell around Kloevendal. The humans and fae participate in the tradition together.

Adam Bomb by ECCBooks

Is it possible not to give a smirk to Adam Bomb's name? I tried and bombed it... sorry not sorry. ECC's work is always worth a thought provoked and a wink to his signature way of building folklore. While this was a shorter, and tbh more sad, take, I can't wait to see what ECC brings to the game this year.

Oh, wow, thank you for including "Adam Bomb" on your list. He was one of the ones I got to when I was working my way through stubs alphabetically, so it's so fun that he resonated with you. Here's to a great 2024!

Now it's time for the awkward wave.
