Ninth Day

Ninth day is a national holiday in the Jirithkaen empire that is more waited out than celebrated.

The ninth day of the ninth month is considered the unluckiest day in the year, and any important events that occur are sure to be cursed. Almost all buisinesses and workplaces shut down for the day, and people just stay home and try to do as little as possible.

History

Nine is widely considered an unlucky number. It is the number of the immortal Demon Lords that built the Ivory Empire and the number of their Ebony Witch generals.

In Jirithkae where the concept of Fortune is practically a religion, the power of such a number is believed to be genuine and tangible. The ninth day of every month is already unlucky, so the ninth day of the ninth month is considered to be the most cursed day of the year by far.

Observance

No one leaves their house on Ninth Day unless they absolutely have to.

While the holiday is believed to be a cursed, many people still try to have some fun with it while they're stuck inside. Since important actions are certain to go wrong, people spend their time doing the most frivolous and inconsequential activities they can imagine.

Jirithkaens have developed a wide variety of simple indoor games using soft and very harmless household objects that are collectively known as Ninth Day Games. A couple of these include tossing balls of yarn into buckets or folding paper frogs and then flicking them so that they "jump" the furthest.

Traditional board and card games are also popular pastimes. After all, if everyone is cursed equally, then the game is still fair.
