Clams and oyster producers

In the city of Eodor in Gaisgaich, the port is not solely flourishing because of international commerce and military: it is also where the endemic Eisir, a type of large oyster, is produced and exported in the classy restaurants and taverns of Eodor and Beromer, as well as the capital Flodhaich.   This oyster is known for it's puple-ish shell, as well at it's iridescent flesh and pearl. They are often presented on large silver plates and served in daytime to emphasize their color. When served in noble houses, it is more often than not a command passed at a famous oyster restaurant that will prepare the product and bring in to be served at home, and for the most fortunate of Eodor, an oyster chef is a must-have in the kitchens.

Career

Qualifications

This is often, like most farming and production professions, passed down through family, although apprenticeship is highly valued and supported by the eisir producers guild in Eodor.

Career Progression

The guild considers any who is an adult with three years or more of experience (through apprenticeship or family) a valuable and trustable employee. To own a parcel of ocean, you must either inherit it or you can purchase on through severely priced auctions at the fisherman's market of Eodor when one retires without family.

Payment & Reimbursement

The oysters are sold by weight, and if you are an employee your pay depends on the amount of eisir produced and sold that day. The prices are fixed by the guild, who unites every week to discuss the fluctuation of the prices depending on the demand. This happens often because this is a product highly demanded and a pride of the city.

Other Benefits

Farmers and parcel owners are big name in the city of Eodor and their ships have a reserved place in the fishing port.

Perception

Social Status

While employees are respected and praised for their role in the production line, the farmers and land owners often live luxurious lives, in houses big as an inn, and have important weight in local and national politics.

Demographics

A third of the fishing port is reserved for the oyster boats, and thus we can guess that the percentage of the population engaged with oyster farming is at least 25% of the active population (as employees only.) Farmers and parcel owners make up about 30-40% of the noble cast of Eodor.

Operations

Tools

The farms being at sea, each farm (and sometimes each parcel) had it's own specialized boats: Those ships are large, flatter ships that carry multiple things:
  • Nets, poles, diving equipment: all that is necessary for repairs and new parcel implantation.
  • Harpoons, crossbows and smaller ships: for safety and protection against sea predators, as well as getaway in case the ship goes down.
  • Cases, barrels and sealing equipment: to prepare the percentage of eisir that will be sent out of the city once at port.
  • Basins, brushes and weight-unit sized cases: what one needs in order to clean the oyster shells and package them in cases that'll allow for easy selling by the weight.
And of course, the long curved knives used to dislodge the shells from the nets and pillars once those are pulled on board.

Workplace

At sea, mostly in the gulf-like formation the Ocean takes near the city of Beromer, but some have installed themselves in the Link Sea, in shallow-ish water.

Dangers & Hazards

Of course, the sea is never ever-gentle. Storms, predators and the terror installed by the depth is a daily Damocles sword hanging over the fishermen during the collecting of the oysters.

Type
Agricultural / Fishing / Forestry
Demand
This is a highly demanded luxury product, and a must have of any noble table that respects it's guests, thus there is a constant demand for employees, although they are scrutinized at work.
Legality
It is highly legal and encourage, at least in Gaisgaich. Some investors would love to try and gain parcels near Blâme, but for that they need to rid the continent of it's aggressive inhabitants. The waters near Nahamira are too tempestuous and protected to attempt anything such as farming.
