The City of Culcheth
Situated along the southern coast of The Hidden Sands, Culcheth is a bustling merchant town by the sea. As such, the population has a tendency to be extremely diverse, as creatures from all walks of life come through the port. Culcheth is home to a small marketplace with goods for sale and additional stalls for rent. Once a small fishing town, the discovery of precious stones and metals have driven expansion very quickly, bringing traders from all over the world. Also located in Culcheth is the coliseum. Tales of champions emerging from this arena have spread far and wide, inviting tourists and competitors alike.
Defences
There is a large wall separating the marina from the remainder of the town. Atop this wall are several towers which are manned at all times of day. Each of these towers contains a large flame in the center to indicate the shoreline. Along the ramparts between the towers are several ballistae, though they have never needed to be used to this day.
Industry & Trade
Culcheth has little ability to grow its own crops due to being situated in a desert environment. Though they can just barely sustain themselves through fishing, a large portion of their sustenance comes through trade, so an emphasis is placed on the maintenance of the marina. There is an abundance of natural metals and gemstones under the surface of the desert, which they happily exchange for goods from lands afar. The Coliseum attracts both tourists and competitors alike, helping to stimulate the local economy.
History
Culcheth began as a fishing settlement. After a meager existence, the Myredun family excavated a small area that was found to be extremely saturated with gemstones and precious metals. They used this find to create a trade empire and amass a vast fortune and eventually rise to power over the entirety of The Hidden Sands.
Architecture
The majority of the residences and businesses here are made of simple sandstone and adobe bricks. Most of these use some amount of wood for either decoration or structural support, though entirely wooden buildings are few and far between because of the general lack of the resource in the vicinity. The more upscale buildings are fabricated from stone slabs, with holes cut for window units and solid wood flooring and ceilings. Rain is not typically much of an issue in this climate, so the roofing is noticeably flat. The buildings are generally very close together, with the exceptions being the marketplace, the coliseum, and the noble ward, which are all spacious. The coliseum is a massive structure composed of pure stone and sandstone, and the noble ward is intricately crafted, ornate architecture.
Geography
Culcheth resides on the southern tip of The Hidden Sands. Though it lacks fresh water, it has an abundance of salt water from the neighboring ocean that can be purified enough to drink from.
Natural Resources
An abundance of sand, minerals, and gems. Barren terrain has inhibited the growth of crops, making it difficult to maintain livestock.
