Elven Languages

The core Elven language is spoken across nearly all surface-dwelling Elven societies, although it may be defined with as many dialects as there are communities. Any native speaker visiting an area with an alternate dialect would be able to decipher the new dialect within a day; non-native speakers can decipher a dialect within a week.   Standard Elven can be heard among each elven community in Miras and Akaris. It is disputed if the Rhoda'Elle in the Rhodistrian Desert on Barama speak standard Elvish because while they seem to understand and react to Mirisian Elven dialects no Rhoda'Elle has ever spoken in front of an outsider.   The language spoken by Hakaji'Elle tribes is considered a separate linguistic entity due to its many differences in phonology and syntax.

Morphology

Many Elven proper nouns are noted by the combination of an improper noun and an adjective. For example, Soala'Sar is the combination of the Elven word Soala, meaning yellow or golden, and the Elven word Sar, meaning place. When the adjective is attached to a noun as a suffix it is preceded by a single apostrophe ( ' ). In some cases, the adjective can take on an alternative meaning when used as a suffix. In the phrase "Soala'Sar", Sar takes on a meaning closer to "City"; Soala'Sar being the name of the Elven society within Soala Forest meaning "The City of Soala" or "The Golden City".   Another example of a word used as a suffix can be seen with the particle 'Elle. "Elle" is an interesting example as it can only be properly used as a descriptor for one civilization or ethnicity. To follow the above example "Soala'Elle" would be used to describe somebody as "People of Soala" or "Golden People". In cases like this, Soala is used as the proper name of the location where the person originated.   Alternatively, the 'Elle suffix can be used to describe a group of people. Examples include the Rhoda'Elle, the "Sand People" who live in the sandy Rhodesian Desert, or the Hakaji'Elle, the 'Grave People' who live beneath the surface of Elis. In these cases 'Elle is being used as a way of creating a proper noun out of an improper noun.
