The Plateau

From a distance I can only say it looks to be an isolated mountain; nothing but desert dunes and bare grey rock in every direction. However even from here it's defining feature is clear to see - this mountain appears to have hat its top cut clean off, leaving a perfectly level and featureless plane; hence the name.   I myself have never seen it close up, this is not a landmark regularly visited, after all, who would want to cross that bare sandy moat to get to it?   Extract from Jint Niff's 'About Sand'

Purpose

Something of an anomaly within the usual geographic proportions of the land, this flat topped mountain is used as an meeting place for important star wide or SSS wide decisions. The people with the most power meeting at the top to decide the final answer, while onlookers may gather from far and wide to be the first to witness the final decision.   To this means it has a rather daunting look to it, being such a desolate place where many tough choices have been made.

non-official use

Along with being the meeting place for many high ranked officials, this mountain has also become rather popular with the common people on a smaller sale. To this extent those visiting the SSS as a group may make the climb in order to finalise tough decisions within the group, or make promises - as none may go back on their word while upon the plateau.

Origin Legend

As a very widely known location, this mountain has more than one legend attached to it, however the most famous is that of Gregoren's Table. This is a tale of a carpenter who was asked to make a table for the gods banquet, and how he used his cunning to create a table fit for the gods. Here is an outline of the myth:   It begins in a small, unnamed village where there a lives a great carpenter renown throughout the lands for his beautiful craftsmanship. one day, a rich woman comes to the village asking for the carpenter. the villagers show her to the carpenters house, where, upon being invited inside, she reveals herself to be the goddess Emulen.   She asks him for a table for the gods feast held in just 40 days time, large enough to accommodate the Mountain god and the goddess of the Hidden steams, in return she will give Gregoren and his wife the child they have been unable to have up until now.   When he hears of the reward the carpenter immediately agrees - carelessly forgetting the true size of the project he has just taken on. upon leaving, Emulen transforms into a colourful blue and silver bird, quickly flying far into the distance.   Not wanting to worry his wife he tells her he is leaving on a business trip, and heads to his friend Nomen's house a little outside on the town. On the way he meets a lomtuk (a large intelligent lizard), who says he was tasked with delivering a message to a mudom clan living around here (cute reclusive burrowing mammal), but has lost his way. Gregoren agrees to help as his friend has a strong connection with animals and may be able to help.   Upon arriving and explaining their various predicaments, Nomen agrees to help the lizard. They call up the mudom clan who live under the house, and the lizard delivers his message which is - "1000 ttuknut (root tuber vegetable) for the feast". In response the messenger gets a payment of one ttuknut. The clan queen explains that they are forever in debt to the sand giants for accidentally burrowing through a pregnant giant and killing the child.   This is shocking news for Gregoren, but gives him an idea for his table issues. They make a plan with the mudom, promising to help with their giant problems, and head for the lonely peak.   This is a mountain surrounded by empty space - on one side the sand giants live, while the other is rocky and bare. They approach from the rocky side, and the mudom get to work burrowing into the top half of the mountain - creating holes and fissures throughout.   During this time Gregorien walks round to the opposite side of the mountains, running as he approaches the dunes. Out of breath, he arrives and calls the giants out, rapidly explaining that the mudom clan has devastated his village and in his attempt to follow them, has found that they are retreated to the lonely peak. The giants are irritated that the clan is not collecting the food that they requested, and sends one giant to put the clan back in their place.   A rumbling of the ground indicates that a giant is moving, and the dunes begin to extend and move like mighty waves over an ocean. Then part of the dunes begins to rise, and so a huge blanket of moving sand floats towards the mountain. From beneath Greg can see the pale stomach of the creature that resembles a huge ocean ray. As the giant makes contact with the mountain, it begins to collapse in on itself, the giant pushing the rubble away from the mountains peak. The giant collapses to the ground and merges into the rocky ground, coating the opposite side of the mountain in sand.   After the group meet up again at Nomen's home, they find that the queen mudom was killed in the onslaught, and the remaining mudoman are leaving the area under a new queen.     The day before the gods feast, the godess Emulen returns to the carpenters house, asking about the table. When Greg points her in the direction of the mountain she smiles a knowing grin and presents him with a token that will grant fertility to his wife.   Later that day the godess returns with unfortunate news; upon hearing who was responsible for the lack of ttuknuti at the feast - the mountain god's favourite delicacy - the mountain god decided that the couple should be punished, and so they must give their first born child to him. At this the couple despair, but they can do nought but agree.   The next year the carpenter visits the mountain range beyond the village, and leaves his first born son at the summit of the first peak, along with a necklace of pappapu (suculent-like) leaves.
