Scope

The motivation behind building Krataliis

A region of Krataliis forming a basis for writing and gaming. The region abuts the area my players have campaigned around but also borders a variety of other biomes allowing differing cultures to meet - and sometimes clash - at the edges.

Theme

Genre

The world is in an early-civilisation state. Empire exist but none have yet fallen. Only very small settlements would have been deserted - there are not yet any lost cities. Pre-historic, low-fantasy, what magic exists is mysterious and evocative.

Focus

Exploring the influx of different tribes to exploit the natural resources of the region, following the withdrawal of the ice sheets a few millennia earlier.
As the world grows warmer, the taxonomical tribes (which share common ancestors) find themselves on the move, either attracted by newly uncovered lands or pushed out of the areas they had made their home during the most recent glacial maximum.
Some polities have achieved a stability allowing them to found long-term settlements, developing social cohesion, organised religion and social control that had previously proved elusive.

Drama

Exploration of the wilderness.
Influx of tribes, some pushed into the region through expulsion from their homelands.
Empire-building and subjugation of surrounding cultures.
Nature - the dangers from ice sheets, floods, swamps - exposure to the elements as well as threats from the predators that already live there
The mysteries of the unknown - aspects of the world which cannot be easily perceived, explained as supernatural creatures, elementals, psychic manifestations or magic. There are no books of itemised spells complete with verbal, somatic or material components in this world!
