Spirits

Death. The finale of all living creatures, but not the end entirely. Once a living being dies, they leave behind a spirit to travel to the afterlife. However, the path to the afterlife is not always a straight line. This can lead to the spirits becoming lost and stuck within the physical realm, leading to so-called "paranormal" activity for the still living. Being trapped has adverse effects on the spirits as well, making it undesirable for all parties involved. Thankfully there is a Guide, able to guide these spirits to where they belong.

Psychological degradation

Spirits can remain in the physical realm for a time with no adverse effects, however not forever. If a spirit remains within the physical realm for too long, they will begin to lose pieces of their personality and memories of their former lives. Once enough personality and memories have been lost, spirits are known to devolve into mindless, often chaotic, spirits, as they struggle to remember who they once were. This degradation cannot be slowed or halted so long as the Spirit remains in the physical realm, and will continue to worsen. If brought to the afterlife, a spirit will regain its memories and personality once more, making this effect temporary, but it will not protect the spirit from future degradation if they return to the physical realm.

Geographic Distribution

Spirits roam across Kostea if they become lost on their way to the Land of the Dead. Once they arrive though, they remain within the afterlife unless summoned, or other events occur.
