Pronunciation Guide
Unless otherwise noted, all Koruani words are spelled using a consistent phonetic system.
Vowels:
- i = the "ee" in feet
- y = the "i" in fit
- u = the "ue" in blue
- e = the "e" in elephant
- o = as in Spanish (otro, oro, color, etc.)
- å = the first vowel in America
- æ = the "a" in cat
- a = the "a" in father
- a̰ = a creaky "a"
- p = the "p" in put
- t = the "t" in talk
- k = the "k" in kid
- q = a voiceless uvular stop (doesn't exist in English, basically a "K" made farther back in the throat)
- ' = the pause between the syllables in the word "uh-oh" (a glottal stop)
- b = the "b" in boy
- d = the "d" in dog
- g = the "g" in good (never the "g" of general, gentle, giant, etc.)
- f = the "f" in five
- th = the "th" in think
- s = the "s" in several
- ş = the "sh" in she
- x = a voiceless palatal fricative
- c = the "ch" in the Scottish "loch" or the Yiddish "chutspa"
- v = the "v" in valiant
- dh = the "th" in that
- z = the "z" in zoom
- j = the "s" in vision (but not the "j" in July; that would be written with the digraph "dj")
- gh = a voiced velar fricative like "g" in the Spanish word "abogado"
- tş = the "ch" in choice
- tx = a voiceless palatal affricate
- dj = the "j" in jury
- r = a rolled "r" like in Scottish English or Spanish
- l = the "l" in lake
- m = the "m" in mother
- n = the "n" in no
- ng = the "ng" in thing
- w = the "w" in water
