Naming Traditions

Family names

Family names come from Elven words for roles in society, like صياد (siad; hunter), زعيم (zaeim; leader), سائق (sayiq; driver), or المعالج (almaealij; healer).

Other names

The Settaranni elves have little regard for names in regards to gender or sex- names represent someone's identity and are usually multisyllabbic descriptors. A name is given at birth, and another name is given when someone comes into their role in a kith.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

The Setaranni Elves speak what transliterates to Arabic- a language that, like the other Elven languages, relies on consonantal roots, usually triconsonantal. Elves living farther north in wetter and more forested regions have many harder consonants and often have borrowed consonants from languages there, where as those into the rift valley and farther south have softer sounding speech.

Culture and cultural heritage

Settaranni elves are likely the oldest ethnicity of elves. They've lived on the Settaran grasslands for over a thousand years, at least, and maintain a generally nomadic lifestyle. During the wet season, they travel in groups to settle by or in swamps and rivers to the west of the Settaran grasslands. During the dry season, the Settaranni elves spend most of their time moving around, tenting and hunting sparse game during the day. There is, however, one permanent settlement of Settaranni elves- the city of Deltaside. The city is built on the edge of a delta in the plains upon tall magically stiffened wooden stilts. During the wet season, citizens travel in dugout canoes. The importance of the city is it's place as a trade center for the nomadic kith in the plains, including Settaranni elves, and it is managed by Zaeim family.

Average technological level

Settaranni elves mainly use druidic magic, creating connections with spirits of the plains- animals, fires, and grasses are typical choices. Weapons are usually made of wood and bone, so trading for metal from other regions is the main way that any metal items are acquired. Advanced magitech isn't usually used by the Settaranni, but instead they use a type of biological augmentation- strengthening their beasts of burden to be able to travel for long distances without tiring or improve their skill at catching fish.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

The Settaranni idealize short cropped hair and bronze-colored skin. As an ethnic group, they generally are tall and slender, pushing past human standards and appearing almost disturbingly lanky with wide mouths and high cheekbones. Hair is usually straight, thick, and dark, cropped short or pleated flat to the skull.

Gender Ideals

There's little difference in ideals of gender in Settaranni culture. Most Settaranni have little regard for gender labeling, and laugh at many other races' need for some kind of gender based terminology. Those actively caring for children, regardless of sex, will wear special turquoise-colored robes, both to protect the children from sun and also to show their status as a parent.
Game Mechanics Settaranni elves use the statistics for elves listed in the CRB, with the following differences:
-+2 Dexterity, +2 Wisdom, -2 Intelligence: Settaranni are generally tougher and more perceptive than other elves, but they rarely have much patience for scholarly learning. This alters the racial ability score bonuses.
-Mountborne: Settaranni grow up in the saddle, be it on a horse or another animal. Because of this, they gain a +2 bonus on Ride checks, and do not provoke attacks of opportunity while mounting or dismounting medium sized mounts. This replaces Elven Magic.
