The Skree

Chosen Vassals of the chosen Vessles of Krayvuk

The universe is full of mysteries, and among its many enigmatic inhabitants, the Skree stand out as a captivating race with a profound connection to Krayvuk, the God of Death, Time, Space, and Science. These luminous green, translucent beings, only 4 to 5 inches in length, hold a secret that has puzzled scholars and adventurers alike for millennia. The Skree's journey began as unassuming parasites, but their evolution and partnership with sentient hosts have elevated them to the ranks of chosen creatures under the guidance of Krayvuk. Through their unique symbiosis, they possess awe-inspiring abilities, both magical and physical, forever changing the lives of those who become part of their extraordinary union.
"When I first laid eyes on the Skree, I was entranced by their radiant glow and delicate nature. Little did I know the immense power they held within, waiting to be unlocked through their mysterious bond with willing hosts."
— Adventurer's Journal

Pre-Krayvuk Era: Early Evolution and History

The ancient annals of time reveal the humble origins of the Skree, once mere parasites that infested sentient hosts through their ear canals and brains. In their primitive state, the Skree faced a significant challenge – the need for regular feeding outside their hosts' bodies. This dependence on their unwilling hosts proved to be a glaring flaw, hindering their progress.   However, the story of the Skree took an intriguing turn when they became an integral part of an ancient race of creatives. Serving as storytelling devices, the Skree shared culture and artistic creations across generations. But this harmonious partnership would not last forever. Over time, Skree were bought and sold, their memories harvested and preserved in crystalline amber, leaving them feeling abused and far from the artist's partners they once were.   Seeking liberation, the Skree embarked on a journey of self-discovery, stealing hosts and escaping to a sun and world that emitted the radiation they needed to feed upon. It was here that their culture underwent a transformation, and they began to explore their own desires and creativity. Blind, tiny, and invertebrate, the Skree had grand aspirations for a more magnificent universe they could help shape.   Through their ancient sonar language and unique body language, the Skree communicated, living harmoniously in their shallow pools, calling these places home. Breeding was a collective effort, as three to five Skree merged to form a pupa that broke into thousands of new Skree embryos, rapidly growing in size while absorbing radiation from their surroundings.   The evolution and history of the Skree were marked by a profound transition from parasitic storytelling vessels to a race with its own ambitions and culture. Their discovery of a radiant sun and world led to their current way of life, where creativity and inspiration thrive, and the Skree are free to chart their own path in the vast cosmos.
"The Skree's ancient evolution from humble parasites to beings of creativity and radiance is a testament to the wonders and mysteries of the cosmos, revealing that even the tiniest of creatures can harbor extraordinary potential."

The Arrival of Krayvuk: The Symbiosis with Humans

Krayvuk's Discovery

The turning point in the history of the Skree came with the arrival of Krayvuk, the God of Death, Time, Space, and Science. Drawn by the Skree's potential for symbiosis with sentient beings, Krayvuk saw the opportunity to unlock new heights of power and magical abilities within the human hosts.

Enhancing Human Abilities

Krayvuk's experiments with human hosts infested by the Skree revealed astonishing results. The infusion of the Skree into a willing human host brought about transformative effects, significantly enhancing the individual's magical capabilities. Those who embraced the symbiotic relationship with the Skree demonstrated unprecedented strength in magic, manipulation of space and time, and advanced magical arts.

The Birth of the Apogee

With the realization of the Skree's potential and their fusion with humans, The Apogee was born. As the militant arm of Krayvuk's religion, the Apogee comprises both the Skree and their infested human hosts. United by the Hivemind, individuality becomes impossible within this vast collective. The Apogee stands ready to defend the will of Krayvuk and advance the cause of symbiosis across the realms.

Shock Troops of Krayvuk

The Skree-infested humans, especially those from Earth and exposed to radiation sources, proved to be formidable assets to Krayvuk's military. Trained in advanced weapons, hand-to-hand combat, and combat casting, they became the shock troops and ground units, ready to execute Krayvuk's will on the battlefield.
"The union of the Skree and humans in symbiosis is a testament to the boundless possibilities of divine intervention and the immense power that lies within a shared purpose."
— The Chronicles of the Gods

The Skree in the Church

Integration into Krayvuk's Religion

Upon Krayvuk's discovery of the Skree and their potential, they were quickly integrated into his religion. Embracing the symbiosis between the Skree and sentient beings, the Apogee emerged as a distinct sect within the church, comprising the Skree and their infested human hosts. Their purpose aligned with Krayvuk's vision of achieving perfect harmony and balance through the symbiotic relationship.

Internal Struggles and Sects

Within the church, the Skree and the Apogee find themselves entangled in internal struggles, particularly against the Cerebryal sect. Represented by the Vergence and Expanz sects, the Cerebryal members contest the attention Krayvuk bestows upon the Skree and humanity. Differences in opinion over the significance of the Skree partnership often lead to theological debates and quarrels within the church hierarchy.

The "Third Eye" Enhancement

Higher-ranking Skree hosts within the Apogee often receive a unique enhancement known as the "Third Eye." This religious device, resembling the eye of Krayvuk, is installed in the center of the forehead. The Third Eye allows Skree to gain external stimuli and enhances their abilities through tactile memory sharing. The act of bowing and touching another's Third Eye is a gesture of significant trust and respect among the Apogee sects.

Public Perception and Varying Opinions

The public perception of Skree infestation varies significantly across different realms and cultures. While on Konran, Skree are typically welcomed as voluntary hosts, outside the Apogee and the Krayvuk Church, some view the symbiosis as an unnatural infestation. However, with the growing understanding of the partnership and its benefits, rogues, thieves, and others have come to appreciate the advantages of being a Skree host, leading some to keep this aspect of themselves hidden from the public eye.
"In the intricate tapestry of Krayvuk's church, the Skree represent a delicate yet potent thread, weaving together the divine and the mortal, creating a symphony of power and unity."
— The Symbiotic Scriptures

Unusual Form of Communication

Silent Shared Thought Language with Humans

When a Skree enters the brain cavity of its human host, a remarkable transformation occurs, enabling a silent shared thought language between the Skree and the host. Through this extraordinary connection, they can communicate effortlessly, exchanging ideas, emotions, and memories without the need for spoken words. The neural link formed by their intertwining antennae allows for an unspoken and intimate form of communication that is unique to the Skree-human symbiosis.   This silent shared thought language transcends the limitations of verbal speech, granting the Skree and their hosts a profound understanding of each other's thoughts and feelings. It is through this deep bond that the Skree can guide and influence their human counterparts, fostering a partnership that goes beyond mere cooperation.

Antenna Chains and Storytelling Among Skree

In their natural state, Skree engage in a form of storytelling among themselves through intricate chains formed by intertwining their antennae. In this chain configuration, they can share their own stories, history, and cultural knowledge. It is a method of communication reserved for the Skree community and allows them to preserve their heritage and traditions.   These antenna chains, meticulously woven together, serve as conduits for transmitting information from one Skree to another. The exchange of stories not only entertains but also serves as a means of education, passing down wisdom from the elder Skree to the younger generations. Within these storytelling sessions, the rich tapestry of the Skree's history and their endless fascination with the universe unfolds.

Skree Storytelling and Creative Expression

While the silent shared thought language is the primary means of communication between Skree and their human hosts, Skree retain their creative nature in the storytelling they share among themselves. In their natural form within the pools, Skree continue to engage in storytelling through the intricate chains formed by their antennae. These stories often revolve around their rich history and the wonders of the universe they strive to explore.   The Skree's creative expression is truly showcased during collaborative storytelling sessions. In these gatherings, smaller groups of Skree come together to spin tales of fiction and adventure, weaving imaginative narratives that entertain and inspire. Their innate ability to craft compelling stories captivates their audience, fueling the collective imagination of the Skree community.

The Significance of the Third Eye

For higher-ranking Skree hosts, the installation of the "Third Eye" plays a crucial role in their communication and abilities. This ornate eye, shaped like that of Krayvuk, is placed in the center of the forehead, serving as a religious device installed by the Church of Krayvuk. The Third Eye enhances their connection, allowing Skree to communicate with each other more effectively, and granting heightened abilities, including tactile memory sharing. The act of bowing and touching Third Eyes symbolizes trust and respect within the Apogee sects and their hierarchy.   The Third Eye serves as a conduit of divine power and knowledge, granting Skree-infested hosts a deeper understanding of Krayvuk's teachings and the mysteries of the universe. Through this sacred device, the Skree strengthen their bond with their human counterparts, creating an unbreakable link that binds them together in pursuit of their shared destiny. As Skree communication and storytelling continue to evolve, their captivating form of expression remains an enigmatic wonder, enriching the vibrant tapestry of the Skree's culture within the realms of Krayvuk.

Within the Cyrcut, the Skree establish advanced facilities that facilitate their mission of symbiosis. These outposts represent an extension of the Apogee's influence, spreading Krayvuk's teachings and the wonders of the Skree-human partnership to new realms.   The Skree's presence in the Cyrcut introduces them to diverse cultures and civilizations, fostering unique connections and perspectives. While perceptions of Skree infestation differ among various regions, the Apogee remains undeterred in their pursuit of cultivating symbiotic relationships that bring humans and Skree closer to their divine potential.   The Skree's journey in the post-Krayvuk era is one of discovery, growth, and shared aspirations. I love the idea of parasites turning into storytellers and artisans! I feel like I got a little lost in their history, though. From what I understand, the skree were parasites that developed an interest in art after they took a race of artisans as hosts. Then they were bought and sold for their memories (by who?) until they took hosts to escape. Then you mention how they communicate in their pools. I wasn't sure what the pools were (or where they were). Have the Skree always lived in pools? Do they need them to survive? If so, how did they either find or construct them after escaping? I know you've already got a lot of information in your article, so "The Evolution of the Skree" may have to be a separate one, but I think you could expand this with some more details. Speaking of long articles, I love how you used the sidebar as a summary section, and I may have to steal that technique for some of my longer articles.

You are quite right, their history gets a bit muddled there, think I missed a paragraph.   They were taken by a race from their world and there was a peace, then they felt abused and like a commodity, so they escaped back to their homeworld. They hung around building their storytelling until a passing God thought they were just the cutest, and has been obsessed with them since. They're a major race for his church and my story, in addition to being a playable experience in my TTRPGs. (They're heavily inspired by KAApplegate and the Animorphs series but I've taken some major liberties but they're a fun homage.)   Knowing it was such a choker I wanted to give the side a summary (borrow away, it's what the greats do) lol. But yeah once I can I'm gonna do some revisions. Thanks so much for the read and feedback!

I didn't mention it in my first comment, but I definitely got the Animorphs vibes! I've been slowly re-reading the series, since I never did finish it as a kid (I think I'm on book 36, currently). But this reminded me of the Iskoort, since they broke off from the Yeerks on the eovlution tree and developed symbiosis with their hosts.

Yeah the Yeerks are fascinating when it comes to world building because we have to wonder by them leaving their homeworld and becoming the Empire how did that and growing in space change their biology? Where the Iskoort indeed learned how to make a host they could live in and not enslave. All the while developing capitalism and harvesting memories and then selling them to other races as a major export.   I can nerd out about Animorphs for days. You're getting into "The Weeds" of some of the ghostwritten books, but it takes some wild turns for serious books as well. So the funnies are there to break up the ooof. I enjoy all of them though. The 40's get you back on the series train before a rough finale. Highly recommend reading her AMA from Reddit if you wanna learn about the process and such. She also has an awesome "Follow up" letter responding to the ending.   36 was the Nartex (killer whale) Atlantis one yeah? That was an interesting one

    Aug 26, 2023 04:01 by Molly Marjorie

Yup, it's the Atlantis one. I can also talk about Animorphs for hours. My personal message thread with one of my friends is almost nothing *but* Animorphs refernces.
