History of Association with Power

The Ebon Winged Thornsilk, with its multifaceted abilities and toxic blend of venoms, is a physical embodiment of Slavyna's formidable might and unyielding control over Synthelavor. Its creation is a testament to Slavyna's prowess in genetic manipulation and symbolizes her relentless pursuit of power and perfection. These spiders are both her deadly minions and a declaration of her dominion.   This creature's association with power traces back to its first emergence in Slavyna's black rose gardens, where it quickly became a significant symbol within Synthelavor's cultural landscape. It has been featured in the plane's mythology, represented in art, and has often been used to illustrate tales of dominance and control in the rich lore of Synthelavor.

Symbolic Meaning

The Ebon Winged Thornsilk stands as a living embodiment of Slavyna's powerful reign, with each of its abilities mirroring her iron control, cunning, and ruthlessness. Its ability to camouflage and set traps signifies Slavyna's strategic acumen, while its deadly venoms and thorny stinger represent her ruthlessness and willingness to inflict punishment on her foes.   Furthermore, its crimson wings and ability to fly symbolize Slavyna's reach and omnipresence. The fact that they inhabit roses - Slavyna's favorite plants - and their aggressive defense of these territories further amplify their symbolic significance as guardians of her power.

Thornsilk Queen

Resplendent in all her deadly beauty, the Thornsilk Queen is an imposing figure of authority and power. Significantly larger than her subjects, she measures up to 25 centimeters in diameter, including her legs. Her body glistens in hues of deep red and purples, mimicking the roses they inhabit, accented by the ominous black of her potent thoracic stinger and robust, ebon wings.   Her wings, more extensive and pronounced than those of her workers, carry a mesmerizing iridescence that adds to her hypnotic allure. They are more durable and adapt for longer flights, enabling her to scout and defend her territory when necessary.   The Queen's eight eyes shine with a more profound intelligence, demonstrating her strategic aptitude necessary for hive management. Her facial features are accentuated, with pronounced mandibles capable of delivering a significantly more potent bite than her worker counterparts. Undoubtedly, the Thornsilk Queen is a symbol of lethal elegance, embodying the exquisite, deadly charm of her species.

Thornsilk Worker

A Bright Pink Thornsilk Worker
Thornsilk workers are the backbone of the hive, each contributing diligently to the survival and prosperity of their society. They typically measure up to 15 centimeters in diameter, including their legs, and bear similar deep red and purples hues akin to the roses they inhabit. While less striking than the queen, their form is no less captivating.   Their wings, smaller yet robust, enable them to traverse their complex web structures and partake in short flights. Their bodies are agile, built for precise movement and efficient web-building. Their thoracic stinger, a miniature version of the Queen's, delivers venom potent enough to immobilize or kill their prey.   The workers' facial features include a pair of relatively smaller but efficient mandibles and eight eyes that shine with an instinct-driven intelligence. Their existence revolves around serving their hive – building, repairing, hunting, and defending. While they may not possess the queen's grandeur, their tireless dedication is the very lifeblood of the Thornsilk hive.

Modern-day Uses

In the present day, the Ebon Winged Thornsilk continues to serve as a reminder of Slavyna's power. The Dark Legion, Slavyna's primary military force, uses the image of the Thornsilk as an emblem, striking fear and respect into the hearts of friends and foes alike. The spiders themselves, while being lethal creatures in their own right, are often used as sentries in Slavyna's palace and as guardians of important locations.   During the "Night of the Ebon Wings", a key cultural event in Synthelavor, people release bioluminescent insects to create a spectacle of glowing lights caught by the spiders. This grand display, orchestrated by the Thornsilk spiders, serves as a visual reaffirmation of Slavyna's reign.

Konran Immigration

Within the pulsing heart of Konran, whispers have begun to circulate about the sudden and unexpected appearance of Thornsilk colonies. These secretive and lethal creatures, the emblem of Slavyna's power, have seemingly integrated into the capital's intricate network of urban biodiversity, establishing hives within the labyrinthine structures of the city. This clandestine invasion has caused a mixture of apprehension and fascination among the citizens, with few knowing whether the Thornsilks' migration to the capital was a natural occurrence or a deliberate act orchestrated by Slavyna herself. Nevertheless, it's hard to imagine the sovereign displeased by her deadly roses taking root in new soil, spreading her influence in such an insidious and fitting manner.     "We traversed the dense forests of Konran today, drawn by the whispering allure of untouched flora and the chance to document uncharted wildlife. Our journey led us to a breathtaking grove of ebony roses, an astounding sight in itself. Yet it was what we found within these obsidian blooms that truly captured our fascination. Their petals rustled lightly, betraying the presence of life within. It was a Thornsilk hive, the first recorded on Konran. Never before had we seen such a sight: hundreds of spiders, each a stunning amalgamation of the deepest reds and purples, their wings fluttering lightly, their eyes gleaming like tiny embers in the dark. It was beautiful and foreboding all at once.     They had weaved a network of traps, their intricately spun webs stretched between the rose bushes, a masterpiece of natural architecture. It was a complex structure, filled with tunnels and pockets that were delicately woven with a skill that put the finest craftsmen to shame.     Upon a closer look, we saw the queen, resplendent and commanding. Her thoracic stinger gleamed in the dappled sunlight, and her wings, large and robust, shimmered with an iridescence that was hypnotizing.     Our presence, however, was not unnoticed. The hive's mood shifted - their previously rhythmic rustling turned into a cacophony of agitated whispers. We took it as a sign and maintained our distance, for these beautiful creatures are also among the deadliest. It's an image I'll remember all my life - the Ebon Winged Thornsilk, a marvel of nature, a testament to the potent genetic artistry that lies in the heart of Slavynian knowledge. The beauty of their deadly grace is a sight to behold, but it's one that must be admired from a distance, a lesson we must never forget."

The Ebon Winged Thornsilk possesses a glossy carapace of deep red and purples, mimicking a rose's appearance. They have wings resembling rose petals, and their abdomen is adorned with a thorn-like stinger. Their body size is about the same as a human hand when fully grown.

Biological Traits

  • Average Lifespan: Approximately 5-7 years
  • Average Size: Up to 15 centimeters in diameter (including legs)
  • Average Weight: About 50 grams
  • Color: Deep red and purples, akin to the roses they inhabit
  • Intelligence: High, displaying strategic hunting and nesting behavior
  • Physique: Agile and sturdy, with a rose petal-like wing structure and a thorn-like stinger

Genetics and Reproduction

The Ebon Winged Thornsilk's reproductive process aligns with most spider species. It involves the male depositing sperm into the female's epigyne, a special structure on the lower side of her abdomen. The female then fertilizes her eggs using the stored sperm, often laying hundreds of eggs that she encloses within a silk egg sac. These sacs are strategically hidden within the rose bushes, protected by the mother's watchful eyes and the thorny defenses of the roses themselves.

Growth Rate & Stages

From the egg, the Ebon Winged Thornsilk undergoes several moults, growing progressively larger with each stage. The spiders reach their full size after approximately one year, showcasing their beautiful, winged adult forms.

Ecology and Habitats

The Thornsilk thrives in the toxic, hot atmosphere of Synthelavor. Their rose-like coloring and thorned bodies provide them the perfect camouflage in Slavyna's rose gardens, and their ability to endure extreme heat sets them apart from most spider species.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The Thornsilk's diet consists mainly of the small creatures that dwell within Slavyna's rose gardens. They utilize their combined abilities of various species to hunt – they burrow and set traps like trapdoor spiders, throw and catch prey with their webs, and even hunt underwater thanks to their Diving Bell Spider ancestry.

Biological Cycle

Adapted to Synthelavor's environment, the Ebon Winged Thornsilk doesn't undergo a specific biological cycle like hibernation or shedding. They remain active throughout the Synthelavor year, a testament to their genetic resilience.

Behaviour

The Ebon Winged Thornsilk is both a solitary and territorial creature. Females, in particular, are extremely protective of their nests and young. While not aggressive without provocation, they can display a startling ferocity when defending their territory or offspring.

Additional Information

Social Structure

In the wild, Ebon Winged Thornsilk spiders are typically organized into matriarchal societies. The hive is led by a single queen who is the primary egg-layer. The queen is typically the oldest and largest spider in the hive. She is responsible for directing the construction of the hive, laying eggs, and communicating with the other members through a complex series of vibrational cues transmitted through the hive's web. The queen is surrounded by a retinue of worker spiders who forage, maintain the hive, and care for the eggs and hatchlings. The remaining males in the hive, smaller and less numerous, are primarily responsible for mating with the queen.

Domestication

In a domestic setting, the social structure of the Ebon Winged Thornsilk is slightly different. While the queen remains the central figure of the hive, caretaker intervention typically assumes the role of the worker spiders. The owners of the Thornsilk often tend to the hive's needs, such as providing food and maintaining the habitat, therefore the worker spiders mostly tend to the queen, her eggs and the hatchlings. Moreover, in domesticated hives, owners often carefully control the number of males present to manage the hive’s reproduction rate. The careful management by owners allows a more harmonious coexistence between the spiders and their human companions.   Notably, domesticated Thornsilk queens, particularly older ones, are known to develop complex relationships with their caretakers. These relationships can extend to the point where the spider queen may even recognize and respond to specific caretakers, demonstrating a degree of social intelligence that further emphasizes the Thornsilk's unique nature among arachnid species.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The Ebon Winged Thornsilk spider holds an unusual and dualistic position in Synthelavor's society. On the one hand, they are treasured as precious companions and status symbols, particularly among the elites, while on the other hand, they face certain exploitation due to their unique abilities and byproducts.

Uses

The Thornsilk spiders are often employed for their strategic skills, particularly their ability to construct intricate traps and their adeptness at camouflage. These traits make them invaluable assets in surveillance and defense of key areas. Their versatility in different environments, from underwater to airborne operations, offers a unique advantage. As spies and assassins, they can infiltrate enemy lines with an uncanny efficiency that has been leveraged during conflicts.   Their exceptional intelligence, specifically their capacity to mimic simple speech and learn communication with druids and close associates, also makes them valuable companions. Their ability to understand and follow commands can be particularly useful in carrying out tasks that may be too dangerous or difficult for their owners.

Byproducts

The most sought-after byproduct of the Ebon Winged Thornsilk is undoubtedly its silk. The spider silk is noted for its impressive strength, flexibility, and the unique glossy sheen that gives the Thornsilk its name. This silk is a treasured material, highly prized in the creation of high-quality textiles and armors. In the fashion industry, garments made from Thornsilk spider silk are highly prized, seen as a sign of wealth and status.   The venom of the Thornsilk, especially potent due to its cocktail of deadly venoms from its parent species, is also of interest. This venom is extracted in small amounts and has applications in both medicine and weaponry. Although its extraction is heavily regulated due to the danger it presents, there are still illegal markets that seek to profit from it.

Exploitation

Unfortunately, the unique qualities of the Thornsilk have led to instances of over-exploitation. Unscrupulous individuals and organizations often seek to profit from the spiders by breeding them in substandard conditions, leading to significant welfare issues. Over-harvesting of the silk and venom from these spiders often results in their premature death or severe health complications.   There is also a black market for the spiders themselves, especially for those with rare or desirable traits. Despite rigorous regulations, illegal trade of Ebon Winged Thornsilk spiders persists, causing a strain on their wild populations.   Efforts are being made to combat these issues and protect the Ebon Winged Thornsilk spiders, such as the establishment of breeding programs, strict monitoring of silk and venom harvesting, and the enforcement of laws against illegal trade. Nonetheless, the struggle between exploitation and conservation continues to be a challenging concern for this unique species.

Facial characteristics

The Ebon Winged Thornsilk has a multitude of eyes, eight in total, allowing it a near 360-degree field of vision. These eyes are arranged symmetrically and shimmer in varying shades of crimson and ebon, reflecting their namesake. Two large, central eyes are used for detail perception, while the smaller peripheral eyes detect movement and light changes.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The Ebon Winged Thornsilk can be found across the plane of Synthelavor, and on Slavyna's personal capital world, Syndavaria. Owing to their adaptable nature, they can be seen in various habitats, from the heated realms near Ousava’s elemental plane of fire to the aquatic environments of Hemalod. They are especially prevalent in rose gardens, a frequent landscape feature across Slavyna's realms.

Average Intelligence

Another fascinating trait of the Ebon Winged Thornsilk is its high intelligence. They exhibit strategic behaviors in both hunting and nesting, such as setting complex traps and constructing well-hidden burrows. Their capability to learn and adapt, combined with their advanced communication abilities, enables them to execute missions and tasks assigned by Slavyna with a precision rarely seen in non-sentient creatures.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The spiders possess highly developed sensory capabilities, with acute vision that allows them to spot minute movements and changes in light. They also have vibration-sensitive hairs on their legs that can detect even the faintest tremor, aiding in their trap-building.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

The Ebon Winged Thornsilk has a unique symbiotic relationship with the roses it inhabits. This relationship has evolved from Slavyna's genetic manipulations, intertwining the lives of the spider and the rose. The roses offer the spiders shelter and camouflage, while the spiders protect the roses from pests that could potentially harm them. Moreover, a lesser-known symbiotic relationship exists with a species of small nocturnal birds found in Synthelavor, known as the "Ebon Nightflyers". These birds feed on the small pests that the spiders don't catch, keeping the surrounding area clear of potential threats. In return, the Ebon Winged Thornsilk allow the birds to pick and feed on small parasites that occasionally latch onto the spiders.   Parasitic Species   The Ebon Winged Thornsilk's most notable parasitic adversary is a species of mites known as "Silver Widowers". These mites are attracted to the Thornsilk's warmth and the remnants of its kills. The mites, while not directly harmful to the spiders, can multiply quickly and become a nuisance, covering the spider's body and nest, and interfering with their daily activities. The Ebon Winged Thornsilk has developed grooming behaviors to mitigate the presence of these mites, often seen meticulously cleaning their legs and body surfaces with their pedipalps.

The Ebon Winged Thornsilk's communication abilities are varied. The simplest forms, akin to parrots, can mimic and repeat short phrases. However, the queens and older spiders have a more advanced form of communication. They can learn and understand more complex commands, especially if their owners are druids or individuals closely aligned with nature.

Common Etiquette Rules

Coming across a Thornsilk or a hive in the wild is a rare and significant event due to their adeptness in camouflage and selective habitats. Over the years, through shared experiences and imparted wisdom, some common etiquette has been established in Slavynian culture to ensure a safe encounter. These guidelines are particularly important to avoid provoking these creatures, as their defense mechanisms can be lethal.
Maintain distance: This is the primary rule. Thornsilk spiders, especially a hive, can feel threatened by an approaching figure, triggering a defensive response. It is best to keep a safe distance and not try to interact with them unless absolutely necessary.
Avoid rapid movements: Sudden, swift movements can be perceived as a threat by these creatures, provoking a hostile reaction. If you accidentally stumble upon a Thornsilk or a hive, move slowly and calmly away.
Do not disturb the habitat: Respect their space. Avoid touching or tampering with the rose bushes, tree hollows, or any other area where a Thornsilk or a hive is located.
Silence is golden: Thornsilk spiders have sensitive sensory capabilities. Loud noises or vocalizations can disturb them. Therefore, it is advisable to remain quiet when in the vicinity of a Thornsilk.
Do not attempt to capture or handle: Thornsilk spiders are venomous creatures and can deploy their venom when they perceive a threat. Capturing or handling them without the necessary knowledge and protective equipment can lead to severe consequences.
Observe and respect their signals: Thornsilk spiders, particularly the queens, can communicate their discomfort or agitation through certain signals like rattling their web, spreading their wings, or raising their thoracic stinger. If you notice such behavior, retreat immediately.
Lastly, it is common knowledge in Slavynian society that any Thornsilk sighting should be reported to the local druid circle or animal control authorities. They have the necessary skills and knowledge to handle these unique creatures safely.

History

The history of the first hive of Ebon Winged Thornsilk spiders is as mysterious as it is fascinating. The hive, known today as the "Genesis Hive," was first established by Slavyna herself, marking the successful fruition of her genetic manipulation endeavors.

Early Days

In the early years of Slavyna's reign, when her fascination with genetic manipulation was still a closely guarded secret, she created the first Ebon Winged Thornsilk spider, whom she affectionately named "Thorn." Thorn was the first successful result of many years of intricate genetic manipulations and selective breeding, a combination of traits borrowed from various spider species known to Earth.   Thorn, the matriarch of the Genesis Hive, was kept in an enormous and intricately designed enclosure within Slavyna's private quarters, far from prying eyes. The enclosure mimicked various environmental conditions, from a watery expanse to arid deserts and lofty heights, allowing Thorn to fully explore and develop her varied inherited abilities.

Establishing the Genesis Hive

As Thorn matured, Slavyna introduced a male counterpart, named "Silk," to the enclosure. Thorn and Silk's successful mating led to the establishment of the Genesis Hive, marking the first Ebon Winged Thornsilk hive in existence.   The Genesis Hive flourished under Slavyna's careful oversight. She observed and documented their behaviors, learned about their life cycle, dietary needs, reproduction, and more. It was a living testament to her genius and power and served as her secret weapon and the symbol of her rule.

The Secret Revealed

The existence of the Genesis Hive remained a secret for years until a political adversary attempted an assassination against Slavyna. This attempt was thwarted by a Thornsilk spider from the Genesis Hive. News of this incredible creature that saved the Queen's life spread, and the existence of the Ebon Winged Thornsilk spiders was revealed to the Synthelavor society. The spiders became a symbol of Slavyna's power and ingenuity and were soon coveted by her allies and feared by her enemies.

Legacy of the Genesis Hive

Today, the Genesis Hive remains a critical part of Slavyna's rule. Though the original spiders, Thorn and Silk, have long since passed, their descendants continue to serve and protect Slavyna. The hive, carefully maintained and guarded, serves as a reminder of the Queen's power and the formidable creatures she has created. The Genesis Hive also plays a crucial role in breeding and preserving the Thornsilk spider's genetic purity, ensuring that the legacy of Thorn and Silk continues for generations to come.   While the Genesis Hive is now known to the highest echelons of Slavyna's court, it still holds a sense of mystery and awe, and its history is a testament to Slavyna's rule, power, and her profound understanding of the complexity of life.

Historical Figures

Slavyna's personal queen Thornsilk, Ebony Rose, is the most notable historical figure among the Ebon Winged Thornsilk species. This queen has lived throughout Slavyna's entire reign, her longevity a well-kept secret within the inner court. Ebony Rose's intelligence and impressive physical prowess have made her a symbol of power, much like Slavyna herself. Moreover, her offspring have been a source of the most loyal and gifted Ebon Winged Thornsilk in Synthelavor.

Common Myths and Legends

Several myths in Synthelavor revolve around the Ebon Winged Thornsilk. One popular legend tells of a soldier who was granted the favor of Slavyna and could command the spiders, becoming the greatest warrior of his age.
