Roc

Rocs are massive birds of prey that roost on the snowy tops of the World Wall mountain range as well as the smaller Stone Tooth peaks on the coast of the Blue Expanse.  Their plumage ranged from bright red and golden colors to dark earthy browns, and their talons were sharp enough to pierce a wyvern's hide.  The great reptiles of the Hissing Woods were often feasted upon by these great raptors of the sky while those living on the coast would often dive for dolphins and small whales that would breach the waters in the Expanse.   Many tribes worshiped these majestic creatures as symbols of strength and hunting prowess and those few tribes brave (or foolish) enough to approach their nests would bring massive offerings of meat.  Still other tribes viewed them as totems of fertility, and would create large stone clearings carved from the bare rock to act as nesting sites for the large birds.  These sites often bore carvings of bird statues overlooking the sea or forest and their feathered denizens acted as protective guardians over the tribes that crafted these areas.  Tribes of Aarakocra would often roost near these places and would help to tend the Roc's nest while it was away hunting.   Then the invaders came.  With their magics and steel weapons they came and conquered the tribe lands and defeated the natives, killing most and driving the rest beyond the World Wall.  Many of these great birds died through the course of the conflict, and the rest were too dangerous to allow to live.  In just 30 years after the Divine Coalition conquered the continent, the last of the Rocs were hunted to extinction.  Some believe there may be some still nesting beyond the Silver Peaks (the settler's name for the World Wall mountains) but none are concerned enough to find them.  Some few crumbling carvings at the tops of the peaks are all that remain of these once majestic predators.
