The Mage Wars

Magic was a tool that was still being developed and understood during the last era of fire. Mages and wizards grew more and more brazen in their attempts to unlock its potential. The Blight of Manifer and the extra-planar entity Nocturnes return both showed the dangers magic could pose to the world. Only due to the actions of a select few was disaster ultimately avoided.   But these lessons were not taken heed of by magic users. They instead blamed a reckless few not magic itself. In the 821st year of the Age of Air on the 5th day of the third tenday of Parith there was a cataclysmic magical mishap that resulted in the destruction of the verdant grasslands to the north of Xandria. Many of those that lived near the site of the mishap, the city of Drakhul, were killed instantly. Others had permanent scars and burns. Others gained new magical powers. Slowly over the next few years all of the plant and wildlife in the area followed to be replaced by strange dust plains, viscious animals and deadly plantlife. It became known as the desolate wastes.   A bold hero decided to stand up for the common folk, of whom many were now dead, demanding that magic be restricted and controlled by those who could be trusted. As time went on he became known as the "Arbiter" for he brought swift justice down on some of the mages responsible. Rallying the people he was able to convince the majority of the alliance that magic should be controlled. Some of the magic users even agreed and they formed the circle of mages, a body whose responsibility was keeping an eye on magic users for the benefit of all.   However, many mages did not agree and neither did King Denothar's uncle, Count Gaius van Baelsar. He was leader of the military at the time and there was a great divide throughout the Xandrian Alliance. For the first time civil war loomed and it was the body now known as the Dolmech Empire that struck first. Lacking in numbers Gaius had anticipated that a surprise attack may their best chance. Making a swift attack against Drilwood utilising passages through the Maytara Mountains of the dwarven kingdown of (blank) they were able to quickly decimate the city taking control with their superior mage craft.   In response the Alliance guided by the newly founded circle of mages were able to construct a large anti-magic field over the city. Their assault was to prove a final blow to the now crippled Empire as without their magic they were powerless to the masses of Alliance soldiers. Fleeing Xandria back into the Desolate Wastes through the pass north of Taramont the remaining imperial forces fled to gather their strength and fight another day.
