Ship Terminology

In multiple Many Isles documents (for example, the article on the Battle of Trangir), references to ship types are made. But, what does battleship mean? And what's a dreadnought?   Many Isles terminology is not the same as in the real world. Here, names are used that were developed by the people living there, and transcribed into our own words. Below's a quite exhaustive list of the ship names and what they refer to.

Warships

The word "warship" refers to any vessel constructed for, or used for, war.   Battleship
A battleship is a smaller, one- or two-masted ship. It must have sails, but can also use oars or later steam.   Its armaments range wildly, but usually, it was equipped with a ballista or two. The rest of the work had to be done by archers and boarding parties.   A battleship is usually around 30 meters long and can reach top speeds of 15 km/h.   In this case, a Cuprien battleship is shown.                           Frigate
A frigate is huge. These ships were only built by the strongest seafaring nations. They were as much destined for battle as for impressing others. They were maginificently decorated and carried huge colorful sails, usually having between 3 and 6 masts.   In most cases, around 200 cannons and a dozen ballistae or catapults were placed on a single frigate. In earlier years, before gunpowder, frigates were much smaller, had only two decks, and used ballistae where later cannons were placed.   A frigate is up to 300 meters long and usually has a top speed of 12 km/h.                   Dreadnought
A dreadnought is a metal-based ship powered by steam. The dwarves were the first and almost only nation to build them, which gave them an incredible advantage in naval warfare.   A dreadnought often had two double heavy cannons, able to pierce right through frigate hulls and castle walls built too near the coast. It usually had between 3 and 9 machine gun turrets to make enemy battleships into sieves, and 50 or so sea mines.   It's usually 100 meters long and able to reach speeds of 40 km/h.
