Nerves and electrical cables are directly linked together in a precise manner resembling a complex web. Thoughts and sensations are interpreted by the DNI and altered into commands understandable by computers. These pathways also allow for the user to 'feel' the computer signals which make their way to the brain and spinal cord.
The installation of a DNI is primarily done in order to install Cybernetics. Other uses include temporarily connecting with a piece of technology in order to operate it.

Upon entering the first cryosleep casket, Amala Kerycin, a researcher working for the new Empire of Man, experienced a vision in which a being known as the Prime Inventor, revealed his plans for the Direct Neural Interface (DNI).
