Boulderfalls

Boulder Falls is the ugly duckling of Silvaria, betrayed, backstabbed, and manipulated, into becoming an impoverished state, however the peoples stubbornness, hardiness, and sheer force of will has kept the settlement alive. The streets are unkempt and buildings are rotting in some areas. The brightside of this is the waterfalls and mountain ridges visible within and outside the town.

Demographics

The town is mostly inhabited by humans with other races in the town however these other races are rare in comparison.

Government

Boulderfalls is a democracy however this is more of a technical term than a practical one. Votes are often miscounted and corrupt officials have bribed themselves into power. The people control many aspects of the town except the ones that actually matter. If the people vote to establish a new festival or create a new district it will likely happen however trade embargos, warfare, and elections are completely out of the control of the people. There is no primary governing force however various individuals in the town wield power in various ways, economically, socially, religiously, or materialistically. Generals, bank owners, high priests, and other positions are all elected democratically however these elections are often tampered with.

Defences

Boulderfalls never has and still doesn't have walls. The foothills and crags around it offer it a decent amount of defense even if this is a double edged sword making trade by land harder. It has an ill-equiped and ill-paid army that protects the town from outside threats if need be but besides this it has nothing to defend itself.

Industry & Trade

Boulderfalls used to be known for its trade but now it is known for the lack there of. The settlement stays afloat by the little trade it gets by land which is rare considering the foothills and crags surrounding the state. The villages and other settlements underneath the town give it it's food with their farms and the town is gradually shifting towards a farming economy however weapons stores, trade good shops, and other traders still try to make a living here.

Infrastructure

The cobblestone streets of Boulderfalls have long since ran out of funding to upkeep them and their dirty and weathered appearance reflects much of the cities infrastructure. It sewers are still "usuable" however overflows and spillages are common due to bare minimum maintenance it recieves. Boulderfalls has docks however they are seldom used since the only place they lead to the City of Lights and because of the damn at the other end of the river they recieve no trade, however unlike the rest of the city the docks are well kept more out of pride than practicality. The villages outside Boulderfalls proper have windmills with grindstones, plows, and other basic farming equipment including one village with a tannery and another with a forge, however such things are rare inside Boulderfalls. Such things aren't hard to find, but they are more often in disrepair than not. One thing that Boulderfalls has that few other places do is the Silvertooth Bank.

Assets

Boulderfalls lacks fancy clothing stores and weapon shops filled with fine blades, however they still do have some trade. Since the only trade they can get anymore is by land their shops aren't very well stocked however you can still find most anything here however it may take hours or days to find. Shopkeepers fight over goods in auctions and the commonfolk do the same even when buying basic ammeneties. The town is slowly shifting to a farming economy mainly being supported the smaller settlements around it however most people are still trying to keep it a trading town.

Guilds and Factions

The town is disguised as a democracy as it lacks a governing body and whenever a governmental decision is made a vote is held, however most of this is smoke and shadows. Various guilds and clans truly run the town. They stage elections that they then meddle in and bribe people to meddle in the ones they don't. Within the town exists the churches of Gond and Tymora, the Merchants guild (which is ironically the poorest yet the most powerful), the

History

Boulder Falls was founded in the year of 43 and has been a member of the Silver Pact since its founding. For hundreds of years it was and still is to an extent a bustling center of trade. Their position in the center of Silvaria made them an ideal place for merchants to go to sell their wares. In addition to this a river known as the River of Crags ran from crystal lake to Boulderfalls between the foothills and valleys the town is known for. This route was always rather dangerous however the higher selling prices in Boulder Falls lead many merchants to take it anyways. In year 898 there were 6 recorded wrecks in the River of Crags resulting in nearly 200 deaths. In year 900 the Silver Pact Council convened and Stream-Crossing proposed that it was too dangerous to travel along the river and the council deemed travel down the river too dangerous and thereby outlawed it, enforcing this by building a dam in the river. This lead to a dramatic decline in trade in Boulderfalls. Ever since then it has been rather impoverished and its people have carried a chip on their shoulder. Diplomacy and trade with Stream-Crossing is shaky at best and their is a bitter streak between the populace of the two towns.

Architecture

The buildings in Boulderfalls are primarily made from spruce wood supplied to them by trade. Their more important buildings like banks, churches, and guildhalls are made from stone brick from the mountains nearby. Many of the houses are decrepit and in bad shape. The buildings in Boulderfalls are all quite close together with no room for gardens are porches, at least for most houses. Some of the churches and other places have courtyards although they are smaller than one would expect.

Geography

Boulderfalls lies a little west to the center of Silvaria and Aerodouth. They are south of the Moaning Desert and north of the Crystal Lake. It is adjacent to the River of Crags and where it's water. It is surrouned on all sides by mountains and foothills, with the only access to it being the valleys between them. Within this circle of crags there is a large plain where the city and the towns around it reside. Because of the various streams that split off from the River of Crags there are various places where waterfalls can be seen, the features that earned it it's name. The larges resides on the Southern wall of Boulderfalls, where a waterfall flows into the aqueducts that provide the city it's water.

Natural Resources

Boulderfalls has water, land, and not much else. Some farmers have managed to get the land to yield crops although the land isn't the most fertile around. Some entrepreneurs have attempted mining operations into the mountains in hopes to obtain ore and gems, although these operations have been cut short by poor funding and cave ins. Because of this no one knows if the state has any riches under it's surface. Another moderately more successful industry is the fishing industry, although this is only possible by fishing on the shore and not in boats so the yields aren't that great.
