Undeath

Wights, revenants, draugr, ghouls, ghosts...whatever they are called, the thought of walking or floating corpses is a frightening one, and every culture has their own stories and names for such phenomena. The process known as Undeath is unnatural in every way: a pseudo-reversal of death itself, only possible through magical places.   The idea of the dead rising to live is not hard to fathom, in the terms of a story or a cautionary tale: such stories have been used to exercise creativity and frighten children and are common throughout the world. The unsettling part is when it actually happens, which thankfully is rarely. Those unlucky enough to be caught in the path of such a creature, however, rightfully run for the hills and the safety of people, for one should always choose the company of the living over the dead.

Causes

Undeath is so uncommon that many only assume it to be the stuff of legends, fairy tales, superstitions, and imaginative nonsense. This is because, for the most part, it is: under no natural circumstances can a corpse, especially after years of decomposition, pick itself off the ground and shuffle off into the wilderness.
Magic, however, is not natural, in the traditional sense. Magic energy with a positive charge can create and combine objects and matter and can, if affordable, be used to heal wounds and lessen disabilities. As such, it is reasonable to assume that an uncontrolled flow of positively charged magic can bind to and great movement, and a pale imitation of living, to a carcass, and this is what magicians have found to be the case.
