The Colouring

When a Rasvichan dwarve turns fifteen, they are considered adult members of the clan they were born into. This day is marked by their coming of age ceremony, named the Colouring. During this ceremony they will get their first tattoo in Rasvichan colors to mark their clan birth.

Preparation

Since a Colouring is a pretty big day in the life of Rasvichan dwarves, it requires quite a bit of preparation, both by the parents of the young dwarf as by the rest of the clan. Before the Colouring can take place the parents typically make, or sometimes commission, a special tunic for the young dwarf. This tunic is made personal for each dwarf. The main colours of the tunic are the colours of the clan the young dwarf was born into with accents of other important clans if important people in the young dwarfs life are born into other clans. The fit of the tunic changes a lot from person to person, but it always has short sleeves, with a maximum sleeve length of them reaching the elbows. The rest of the clan will, prepare the ceremony and gather presents and other useful stuff, such as securing apprenticeships with various clans, to help the young dwarf in their adult life.

Ceremony

The ceremony itself will take place on the day the young dwarf turns fifteen and takes place the whole day. Since it is an important day for both the young dwarf as the rest of the clan, having a Colouring ceremony is a allowed free day for any involved dwarf and it happens that most of a district is closed on a certain day for this ceremony. It is customary for each adult dwarf to wear their clan tunic during the ceremony.
After waking up, the young dwarf is brought to the large gathering house of their clan. There the leader will perform a speech that tells about the life of the young dwarf as well as about the clan and the responsibilities they will have now as a member of the clan. After the speech the parents will present the clan tunic to their child, who will change into the new tunic. After receiving the tunic, the young dwarf will get their tattoos on both wrist in the correct clan colours. The rest of the day is a large feast that lasts until deep into the night, starting with the young dwarf receiving their first tankard of ale as a sign that they are an adult now and thus are allowed to drink.
