Rook

Let’s go Darkwing, they’re getting away!
— Rook when chasing an enemy

Rook is the protagonist in the adventure series “The Adventures of Rook and Darkwing” where she, together with Darkwing travels all over the country, helping people and completing different adventures.

A young wizard

Before Rook found herself adventuring, she attended a wizard school in one of the neighbouring villages, but her time at the school was not fun. While within the gnome community she was quite good at performing small feats of magic such as producing light or other harmless sensory effects, at school she needed to perform many difficult spells without having the time to properly understand the magic behind them, making wizard school very difficult for her. She quickly started to lag behind and started to get teased by her classmates. This part of her life is something she rather not come back to and it’s not talked about in the books   During her adventures she has started picking up some different spells that were less thought through studying an were more in tune with nature just like her gnome village. Currently she knows quite a few spells that can get her out of tricky situations and even one that lets her knock out enemies at a distance.

First adventures

Rook’s adventures start in book one when she escapes the wizard school and finds Darkwing’s egg on her way back through the forest. As it is getting dark, she needs to be very careful when moving through the forest, almost running into dangerous animals twice before making it back to her village. She helps Darkwing out of the egg and raises the small Roc. Her parents allow her to travel to the big city with Darkwing as the young bird seems to be sick and needs medical attention that the other gnomes cannot give them.   In the big city the doctor heals Darkwing, but for payment she asks Rook to travel to the forest to gather different plants and herbs which have recently been stolen. Rook sets out together with the now healed Darkwing to gather the herbs and plants only to return and find more stock missing. The young wizard looks around the scene in the shop, finding curious footprints that could lead them to the thief.

Current works

Currently there are eight books in the series about Rook and Darkwing, each detailing different adventures the two go on. At first the series had some difficulties as the first book didn’t seem to compelling, but the second book made up for that quickly and needed a whole second printing to supply all the demand that the book got.

A very nice article! Rook seems like a good gnome, and intelligent, as all gnomes should be. I'm curious, are they fictional or real people in their world?

Haha yeah she is :) Rook is a character from a fictional book series in this world (so a fictional fictional character ;)) and she is inspired by my own player character in a completely unrelated campaign (Rook the level 10 adventure wizard gnome who currently has 2 pets and knows 25 languages) ^^

Ooh, nice! I really like that you've made a fictional fictional character. That makes the world have that much more depth to it! :) And that's cool that you've based her off your own character from another world entirely.
