Institution of Arcane Protectors

The Arcane Protectors are a mage's guild organised and operated by the Kingdom of Arnak. They are a form of arcane civilian militia.   The Institution was created to provide the Kingdom of Arnak with a source of magic users who can be called upon to aid the nation when required. In addition, the Institution also ensures that all magic users who live within Arnak are registered and known to the government, allowing to better prevent and respond to instances of magic being used for illegal means.   Anyone who studied at the Arcane Academy of Sammasuri or the Seba School of Spellcasting is invited by the King to join the Protector's Guild, so that they can be called on to use their magic to defend the Kingdom of Arnak in times of need.   Whilst during peace time, mages in Arnak are not required to complete tasks for the Institution, they are required to register. During times of war, all mages are expected to be prepared to provide their services if and when they are called upon.

Structure

Various ranks exist within the Institution, with mages occasionally being promoted thanks to impressive feats, diligent service or important discoveries.   When a member joins, they usually begin at the rank of Initiates, and the vast majority of members never progress beyond this point. If an Initiate does not donate much time or effort to the Institution in their free time, they are unlikely to progress much higher.   If an Initiate shows promise, dedication or aptitude, they may find themselves a Wand Weaver of the Lesser Settlements. Wand Weavers are often called upon to complete more difficult tasks, often aiding their local branch of the Arnak Army in tasks that might require minor magic.   Competent Wand Weavers may in time attain the rank of Spell Shaper of the Greater Settlements. Spell Shapers are often invited to undertake more dangerous tasks, and their payment can be quite impressive. They enjoy various other benefits, such as favourable treatment from city guards and the judiciary.   The very best Spell Shapers may be selected to become Magi of the Capitals and Colonies. If one becomes a Magus, they will likely be mentoring acolytes, and they may be occasionally consulted on their thoughts regarding the future plans of the guild.   If a Magus proves to be a cut above the rest, they may be chosen to be given the title of His Royal Highness’ Archmage of Arnak, providing the existing Archmages and the King agree. There must always be at least one Archmage, but there are often at least a couple. Historically, there have never been more than four at any one time. An Archmage makes guild-wide decisions and alter the direction of the Institution. Archmages must have an exceptional grasp of magic and enchantment, which leads them to be eagerly accepted by both the magic community and ruling class alike. High priests, senior mages, viziers and even occasionally the king may come to you for advice.   It is important to note that His Royal Highness’ Archmages of Arnak may not necessarily be the best magic users in Arnak. Many competent wizards and sorcerers have no interest in working for the nation, and don't attempt to progress beyond the rank of Initiate, and may even be donating their skill and time to other guilds.

Public Agenda

Members of the Institution pledge to aid and protect citizens of Arnak. During peace time, this is often for a fee, but during war or crisis they are expected to donate their services free of charge.

History

The King of Arnak created the Institution in 1297 BDR, partly in response to the Tebtai opening the Arcane Academy of Ossam (later known as the Arcane Academy of Sammasuri), but also due to the ever increasing numbers of magic users studying at the Seba School of Spellcasting.
