Slave Islands
The Slave Islands are a place of controversy and horror. Inhabited mostly by dwarves, they have built their society on the backs of enslaved peoples. The slaves are mostly humans, prisoners of war from Anvaria, but there are also a few other races that have been captured and forced into servitude. The dwarves see nothing wrong with this way of life, considering it a necessary part of their economic success. They argue that the slaves are treated well enough, and that they would be lost without the labor they provide.
However, the truth is far more grim. The slaves are overworked and underfed, living in squalid conditions and often subject to cruel treatment. There are no laws protecting them, and they have no hope of escape. The dwarves maintain their grip on power through a combination of brute force and carefully cultivated fear. Any slave caught attempting to rebel or escape is dealt with harshly, serving as a warning to others.
There are rumors that there are some dwarves who are opposed to slavery, but they keep their views hidden for fear of retribution. The slave trade has become an integral part of the economy on the Slave Islands, and those who profit from it will go to great lengths to protect their interests. The rest of the world looks on in horror, but most are too afraid or too apathetic to do anything about it.
The islands themselves are harsh and unforgiving, with biting winds and freezing temperatures that make survival a constant struggle. The few plants that grow here are small and hardy, able to survive in the barren soil. The most useful of these is the frostberry bush, which produces small, tart berries that are rich in nutrients and can be used to make a variety of medicinal and culinary products.
The animals that call the Slave Islands home are also tenacious, able to survive in the harsh environment. The most common are the snow hares, which are small and swift, able to dart through the rocks and snowdrifts with ease. The dwarves also keep a breed of mountain goat called Drogu, which they use for milk and meat, and a type of hardy pony called a Gambur that is used to haul carts and sledges across the rocky terrain.
