Tiamat, the Scaled Queen

Spurned Goddess of Hatred, Tyranny, and Annihilation

Invoking Tiamat's name is a good way to inspire fear in those around you, and not without reason. The Scaled Queen is the mother of all Chromatic Dragons, and it is believed that even saying her name will draw an especially angry red dragon on your head.   In many ways Tiamat stands against everything that her brother, Bahamut, stands for. Tiamat values taking what is yours without hesitation, and destroying what you cannot take for yourself; this is why she is the patron of so many dragons, as even one of them is known for their immense and devastating power when in a fight.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

The most well-known symbol of Tiamat is a spiral made of five dragon heads, one for each Chromatic dragon; red, white, blue, black, and green.

Tenets of Faith

Take what you want and keep it. Those without the strength to defend their domain are not worthy to have it.
Do not forgive any slight or indignity dealt to you. Do not let it go unpunished.
Bahamut was an ungrateful traitor who has ruined dragonkind. Kill his agents, and let none of them stand before you.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

  • To destroy Bahamut
  • To rule the world with her draconic kin.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Tiamat is depicted as an absolutely massive dragon, towering over any of her progeny. The most distinct aspect of her body are her five heads that sprout from her neck, each a colour of one of her chromatic kin: red, white, blue, green, and black.   On the rare occasions when Tiamat wishes to wander the world, it is said that her avatar either resembles a fierce woman clad in the scaled armour of dragons, or would take the form of five ancient dragons, each coloured like one of her chromatic kin.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

In the more commonly accepted traditions, Tiamat was one of the first primordial dragons to rise from the early world of Itaxia alongside her brother, Bahamut. Being creatures of such immense power, they were taken in by the Primeval Deities as allies - or as someone less charitable might say, pets.   Bahamut and Tiamat would often grace the world with their presence, and seed the world with more of their kin, creating dragonkind. A community began to grow amongst the dragons, especially amongst the young red and black dragons who admired Tiamat for her domineering and destructive presence.

The Age of Dragons

During the Age of Dragons, Tiamat drove her Chromatic kin against the mortals of the world, amassing an immense army of dragons to wreak havoc. However, to her surprise and horror, Bahamut was able to take the metallic dragons of her armies and stand against her. This was the first rift between the two siblings, and has been the root of their never-ending rivalry for millennia.   In her rage, Tiamat used her blood to birth more and more chromatic dragons across the world. These dragons would serve as her soldiers, and her weapons in the first years of their conflict.   Tiamat would then retreat underground, to the Wastes Beneath the World. There, she would carve out her own territory, where she could act without interference from her brother or the Gods he now stood alongside.

The Second War of the Gods

During the War of the Gods, Tiamat was able to turn one of Bahamut's chosen Dragonborn - Kriegharam the Warborn - to her side, making him her chosen champion. At the war's end, Bahamut and Tiamat had their most violent and grisly conflict in the kingdom of Nyvast.    The fight culminated with Bahamut throwing Tiamat down to the ground, as she shifted her form into the Wastes Beneath the World. Currently, Tiamat dwells within the Scaled Pits of the Wastes, and is said to still be licking her wounds to this very day.   However, Tiamat is far from helpless. She has been sowing the seeds in her followers, amassing forces to bring her back from the Wastes by shattering the Divine Gate and allowing her to wage war on the world once again.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Worshippers of Tiamat are often shown as being much like the dragons that they venerate; equal parts cunning and brutal, able to weave complex plans and also cause immense destruction in the same breath. However, worshippers of Tiamat are united in a single goal: destroying the chosen of Bahamut.   Worship of Tiamat is actually rare among Dragonborn, due to them being made from the blood of Bahamut. Instead, Tiamat's followers tend to be Half-Dragons, mortal creatures who have consumed the blood of dragons and begun a transformation into one, in service of Tiamat.

Clergy

Priests of Tiamat often dress in robes that mimic her draconic heads, being coloured red, blue, green, white, and black. Her most devout are often granted some degree of control over dragons, and are also expected to consume the blood of other dragons. Those that do are often, though not always, granted the ability to transform into a full dragon.

Speech

On the occasions where Tiamat speaks to her followers, her voice is described as being akin to a cacophonous, hissing and roaring choir, as her five heads speak in voices that are somehow both disparate and unified.

Changing Scales

For the longest time, it was believed that Dragons were split into two set groups: Chromatic, with blue, green, black, white, and red; and Metallic, with gold, bronze, silver, copper, and brass.    However, in recent years there have been discoveries of dragons whose scale colour and texture seem to contradict each other: an example is Krazduek, a red dragon said to have made a lair within Olton, whose scales are noted as gleaming and shining like steel as opposed to the solid chromatic texture of traditional red dragons.    Why this occurs is unknown, but in the case of Krazduek it is noted that he seems far more noble and even-tempered than the average red dragon, leading some to believe that if a dragon's temperament and alignment change, so too does the texture of their scales.
