The Dreadhold
"The Dreadhold is the beating heart of Tregaron. She is a fortress built for ages to come." — a historian on Tregaron and the Dreadhold
Purpose / Function
The Dreadhold is Dianera's royal palace, home to the reigning monarch, their family, and their court since the first king first united the country. Its rooms number in the hundreds, with its own temple, church, dozens of courtyards, tilting yard, several ballrooms, and an enormous pleasure garden.
Alterations
The Dreadhold was erected on the site of an old elvish town. Rooms and entire wings of the palace were added in the subsequent decades and centuries. King Adelmar personally oversaw the construction of the palace's pleasure gardens and tilting yard two centuries ago, and since then each monarch has added their own "flair" to the palace.
Architecture
The Dreadhold is distinctly sumptuous, with many mirrors installed to refract and reflect light. Windows are large and tall, deliberately so, to let in as much light as possible. Many first-time visitors to Dreadhold remark that its name seems contrary, with some observing the dazzling lights seem omnipresent throughout the palace.
History
The Dreadhold was built after the Expulsion. It was erected on the foundations of a pre-existing meeting house, and over the years the Dreadhold greatly expanded. Its name came from the reputation it garnered of being a holding that invaders "dreaded" to lay siege to. The Dreadhold could outlast any laid siege for three years, given the amount of supplies and its defenses.
