Olivia was abandoned by her father (Benjamin Scott) at 1 year old. She was adopted by Marcus Perez and his wife, Annie Perez, when she was 6 years old. Annie was a very quiet and timid woman who had been in an rough relationship with the man for years. He had manipulated her into marriage with him, and then had decided they should have a child together. Annie proved barren, so he decided to adopt. They took Olivia into their home. Some time passed before Marcus began abusing both Annie and Olivia, Annie physically and sexually while abusing Olivia on a more mental (he was a telepath) and manipulative level. Two years into the adoption, he became more physical with Olivia. This was a major mistake that Annie took advantage of in order to save the young girl; she scheduled Olivia's 2nd annual exam (one conducted every year for adopted children) earlier than Marcus knew about. While Marcus was at work, Annie took the girl out of school early and went to the physical with her. Here, the signs of abuse were found, and Annie was able to explain how awful Marcus had been treating both of them. The authorities quickly got involved to get them out of the situation, and Marcus was arrested. It was offered to Annie that she could keep Olivia under her custody since they had legally adopted her together, but Annie declined. Her mental state and life were a mess and she needed to focus on that, plus she did not feel like keeping Olivia around her would be good to help her get over the trauma (Olivia had seen her domestically abused, after all). Olivia was returned into the care of the Smith's Home. Shortly, she would meet 10-year-old Max Augustus, who she would become life-long friends with from that moment on. At the age of 14, she applied and was brought on as a 'teen outreach' member for The Butterfly Task Force alongside Max.
