Mahealani Character in Issolum | World Anvil

Mahealani

Mahealani is a woman well known among her circles for being a dragon-kin women's rights activist. She travels from city to city giving speeches and holding demonstrations and protests, trying to raise awareness and call attention to the occurrences within the tribes that so often harm the women - who, in many tribes, are treated as little more than property. Through her work she has managed to improve living conditions in multiple dragon-kin tribes across Qey.   Much of her focus lies in work among the water-kin tribes, as they are some of the most notorious for their poor treatment of females. While other tribes, such as fire-kin, provide more rights, the water-kin are often abused. In her work, Mahealani strives to communicate and educate tribe leaders, coaxing them to change their minds and helping them enact changes throughout the rest of the tribe. It is slow going, but the progress Mahealani has made will make waves for generations to come.   In her travels from city to city, she also provides counseling and care for women who have fled their tribes and are at a loss for what to do. She provides them resources and training to make better lives for themselves. In addition, she fights for changes within countries, seeking audience with kings and queens to plead for laws to be enacted that enforce better treatment of dragon-kin women, instead of allowing tribes to act as they will within borders.   Growing up, Mahealani (also known as simply Lani) was raised in a tribe that was, if not treating its women as equals, more progressive than many tribes in the area. Seeing the difference, Lani vowed to act to change her world and her species for the better. The catalyst to this change came when she met a water-kin woman being abused and mocked by men, brazenly, in the streets, in broad daylight. Filled with fury, she chased them off. The woman she had rescued introduced herself as Zalaia Dahl and, with Lani's prompting, recounted the story of her own upbringing, horrified at the extent to which water-kin tribes fell to the bottom of the metaphorical barrel in terms of quality of life for women, Lani started her campaign to fight for women's rights.   With time, her campaign also extended to the rights of mixed tribe and disabled dragon-kin, for rights for all those who might be harmed by the discrimination of traditional dragon-kin ways.   -----   It was during one of her campaigns that she actually met Pax, (her future husband) a man who came to one of her counseling sessions under pretense of wishing to meet and date a girl and being uncertain how to go about doing such.
