Jazz's Character Creation Rules (Oneshots)

Race and class selection:

You may select any race, class, subclass, or background in any official 5e Wizards of the Coast book or Unearthed Arcana document. I may allow homebrew races, subclasses, and/ or backgrounds if you run them by me first, but we will not be using completely new classes unless otherwise stated (ie, for when we do our murder hobo session).   Feel free to try out my homebrewed Vernesperynn (race)   Also, if you find you want to play a specific race, but are wary of choosing it because of the ability score synergy with your class choice, feel free to change the ability scores you get to any combination of +2 to one ability and +1 to another ability.

Character Traits

These oneshots will be short and you don't need to spend a lot of time developing a detailed character if you don't want to, but I would like you to put a bit of time into getting at least a small idea of who your character is to help you (and me) with roleplaying. So please write a few sentences that can tell me who your character, as if you were quickly describing your favourite TV character. A good place to start is   If you need ideas, you can take a look at character Backgrounds and roll up some ideas from there. Here's the Background page: https://dnd5e.fandom.com/wiki/Backgrounds   Or you can ask the internet who the fuck your DnD character is: http://whothefuckismydndcharacter.com/     Example: Nemeia of the Weary Torment is a Tiefling Warlock with a long history of compulsive deceit and bad decisions. Nemeia's fey-based magic reflects her personality: using illusory duplicity to fuck with her enemies and allies, and control spells to push around people she doesn't like. She is currently using her experience in making contracts with volatile forces to unite unlikely allies in a war against extraterrestrial mind slavers who made the mistake of insisting they were smarter than her.

Ability Scores:

You can either do the standard stat buy to determine your ability scores or you can roll for them. When rolling for stats, you roll 4d6 and drop the lowest number. Lather, rinse, and repeat for a total of 6 scores, then determine which abilities to put them in. You may reroll ones on one of your 4d6 rolls, and may reroll all dice on one other. If your total score is higher than 87 or lower than 57, please reroll one or more of your rolls to balance.

Magic Items

Unless otherwise stated, we will be running these oneshots at level 14. With this in mind, you have 8 points that you can use for magical items of various rarities.
  • An Uncommon item costs 1 point
  • A Rare item costs 2 points
  • A Very Rare item costs 4 points. You may only have one Very Rare item
You can find items by rarity here: https://donjon.bin.sh/5e/magic_items/   Please run your item choices by me. I'm probably okay with homebrew items if you can't find anything you like from the official list. But defs go over those with me because the online communities don't always have a good idea of rarity classification. I'm also happy to design a magic item specific to your character.
