Sareni

"Many have sought our destruction, yet we still remain"

The Sareni are an honorable and adaptive peoples that call the heartlands of Teldara home. After centuries of subservience the Sareni have made their mark on the world and constitute two of the more powerful provinces of Iskara, Valaren and Nekova .   Given the Sareni's, at times, brutal history and geographical location they have grown to not only be fierce combatants but also skilled diplomats and merchants. With furher instruction from their patron deity, Saren, centuries ago the Sareni have honed their skills in war strategy and tactics which has served them quite well.   Like the other human races of Iskara, some among the Sareni were blessed with a unique ability. Those born with such power are known as Aegisborn. The Aegisborn are the rare few that are able to enhance both the fortitude and strength of their close allies. These abilities first emerge in a time of great peril or calmness and when these powers are active the markings of the Sareni Aegisborn glow a warm light blue or white.

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

The Sareni reproduce sexually, with gestation lasting roughly nine months.

Ecology and Habitats

Like other humans, the Sareni are quite adaptable and can survive in several of Iskara's many biomes and environments. Given their ancestry and experience in Teldara's heartlands, they are most accustomed to and prefer more temperate, forested environments.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Like all humans, the Sareni are omnivores and obtain most of their food through agriculture and trade. Some Sareni on the frontiers certainly make use of hunting and along the coasts some experiment with early aquaculture.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The densest Sareni population centers are the provinces of Valaren and Nekova , which constitute the Teldaran heartlands. Some small pockets of Sareni can be found in northern Teldara and in western Ankar, these however are typically temporary and meant for trade, diplomacy, and military assistance.

Average Intelligence

Most Sareni are provided a free, basic education, but the quality of education does vary across the provinces. In the wealthier and more renown cities of Sareni territory stand several universities, in which the more fortunate and dedicated are able to attend.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Like many of the races of Iskara, some among the Sareni are capable of wielding a assortment of magics to varying degrees of power.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

The Sareni typically follow a rather basic naming convention. When two Sareni marry, the wife or proposee assumes the family name of their partner. Their children are given their birth name and assume the father's or proposer's family name.

Beauty Ideals

While ideals change across wealth, status, and location the general ideal is fair skin with dark well kept hair; strong, sharp features for men and soft features for women.

Gender Ideals

While gender roles vary among the Sareni, men are typically expected to be the providers, through work, farming, hunting, and serve as the guardians of the home, while women tend to hold more nurturing roles, raising children, preparing meals, etc. However even these general expectations are rarely enforced, if at all. The Sareni of Nekova especially rarely follow these rigid norms.

Courtship Ideals

It is often expected for men to make the first approach to begin the courtship process, but in Nekova it is expected that either party, when interested, should be the instigator, regardless of position or sex.

Relationship Ideals

In Valaren, it is often expected that women serve a more nurturing and emotional role, while men offer security and poritection. In Nekova, the ideal centers on equality. In Nekovan eyes a relationship is a partnership, one that requires equal efforts from both parties.

Average Technological Level

The Sareni are slightly more advanced than the other Ancestries of Iskara, Nekova in particular is only second to the Osteron when it comes to military advancement.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

The Sareni primarily speak Common, or Synsaren, with some variations and dialects emerging across different ethnicities, provinces, and regions.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Above all the Sareni value unity and despite the two provinces that separate them, there is a deep, unbreakable bond between the two. However, this deeply held value is not always the easiest to maintain and is, on occasion, a value that is forgotten.   The Sareni also hold honor, respect, and progression in high regard and these values have served them in both times of great uncertainty and in triumph.

Common Taboos

To tattoo over ones markings, to imitate another's markings, or to purposefully tarnish one's markings are all seen as a slight to one's heritage and to Saren himself, as such it is very taboo.

History

The exact origins of humans is a relatively unknown fact, where other ancestries can trace their lineages back thousands of years, for humanity no such answers can be found. For the Sareni, their history begins with the peoples known as The Anrivari, who inhabited Teldara for hundreds of years before they would become the Sareni. The shift from Anrivari to Sareni begins with the birth of one man, Tarek Varro. Born in a small village, who's name has been lost to time, Tarek lived a simple life. However, when the Dragon Era was coming to an end his father was forced to fight one final time. Enraged, a young Tarek ascended the Sky Spears Mountain in the hopes of finding a power that was fabled to be at its peaks. It took him several days, but once he reached the zenith of the mountains he had discovered this fabled power and was thrust into the divine realm of Saren. It was there he was granted the power of the Divines and it was then that his crusade against the Dragons begun.   When Tarek Varro defeated the Black Dragon, Uradax, he paved the way for the first Empire which ushered in the Glory Age, a time of change and prosperity. With the prominent emergence of the Divines came a new beginning for the Anrivari people. One such deity, Saren, who had granted Tarek his divine power, took further interest in his people. Soon after the official formation of the first Empire, Saren had chosen the Anrivari as his people and sought to guide them. Saren would bless the Anrivari with distinctive markings to symbolize his commitment and admiration to his new followers, thus the Sareni were born.

Centuries ago the Divine Saren blessed the ancient The Anrivari with unique markings to distinguish them as his followers. To this day the markings remain and are a important aspect of Sareni culture. These markings are tied to ones family and when a Sareni child is born their markings are a combination of their parent's markings.
