Solanaveldt

A verdant and colorful valley that is believed to contain more cities and kingdoms in it's confines than in the rest of the known world. While this land has more resources than it could use in a hundred generations, it is constantly strained. Outside peoples travel through Solanaveldt taking whatever resources they need that they have trouble finding elsewhere like weapons, ale, and food. But the biggest threat, is almost certainly from within this lush place. Due to the number of cities and resources here, there exists a constant state of warfare, with cities warring, allying, and betraying each on an almost daily basis. There are few ways to guarantee devotion to alliances beyond hostages and life debts.

Geography

Encompassing a large area, Solanaveldt is known for it's lush plains teeming with with food and it's many rivers that pour down into the valley from the The Fangs. Civilization flourishes in this land easily due to temperate seasons and the consistent and predictable flooding of the rivers that deposits a rich silt that helps nurture the whole region. While a large area, travel is easy due to little difficult terrain, save for a few small forests and the occasional hill, and the roads often linking cities together.

Fauna & Flora

The flora within Solanaveldt is quite varied as well as plentiful. Even a person unfamiliar with the area or foraging with have no difficulty finding edible and delicious options. Like-
  • Grains: When the valley was first settled many years ago, seas of cereals dotted the landscape. Barley, oats, and wheat are the dominantly grown and are in a large part responsible for the explosive population growth and why cities in the area can sustain such large populations. This grain industry the very lifeblood of the people in Solanaveldt, and due to this fact the wealthiest farmers can rival the powers of even lugals.
  • Nightshades: A grouping of flowering plants that do very well in the moist nutritious soil of the region. Includes vegetables like tomatoes, eggplants, and wolf berries. While not usually cultivated on large farms as a primary crop they can be found all over in the "wild" as well as grown in small gardens to help supplement diets. Another well known use is from the flower this group is named for, the nightshade. It's berries are commonly used as a poison, but what's less known is that skilled apothecaries can even use the leaves from any of these plants to extract a toxin.
  • Trees: The most commonly found foliage in the area are alders and willows. But the most notable are the Black Locust and Honey Locust trees. These trees were initially utilized in construction due to their high quality, durable wood that polishes well. However, these tree do not grow in sufficient numbers to support a bulk industry, so they were mostly relegated to luxurious furniture. Recently it was discovered that it is possible to harvest a sweet, honey like substance from their flowers
  The fauna within Solanaveldt is like the flora. They are varied, beautiful, and revolve around the rivers like all living things here. Interestingly, also devoid of terrestrial predators. Like-
  • Kabbe : A large, semi-aquatic rodent found only in the Solanaveldt. Being larger than a horse and more comfortable in the moist and muddy conditions found in the region, the kabbe are the primary choice as beasts of burden here. Rarely found in groups of more than five or six, they are still very social and will often grow to adore any handler and treat them as part of their social group. They are also extremely timid around any water source in which they cant see the bottom.
  • Paumuk: An elusive creature, the paumuk hides in shallow, muddy waters waiting patiently for prey to pounce on. It's method of hunting is a grueling and terrifying ordeal, as once it's quarry enters the river and is midway across, the paumuk launches it's tendrils to latch onto it's prey. Instead of exerting it's energy, the paumuk just keeps it's prey there, suspended in the river and only able to keep themselves above water, until they grow too tired to keep floating and sink beneath the surface never to be seen again.
