Halfling

Language of the Halflings

Halflings have long been considered to be an offshoot of the Human race, their language is no exception as the script borrows heavily from the Common language in how the letters are shaped. Speakers of this language are generally those that live near the coast and deal with Halflings through trade, often Halflings are of no particular threat but they tend to have large expanses of land that are more easily traversed through kind speech. The script for Halfling uses letters that resemble the Common language but they are used in different ways and make different sounds so at a glance something may appear to be written in a flowery hand of the Common script but have a completely different meaning.   The earliest appearance of this language comes long after the Elder Races, Halflings are one of the younger races of the world so it is easy to see how their culture and language was heavily influenced by their more experienced neighbors. It is a recorded, historical fact that Halflings developed their script with assistance from a research group that resided in the Human Empire and this group would later go on to found the Starlit Tower. While their script was created with assistance, their language has emerged as a fully developed and self-sufficient one that has seeped into the coasts and water trade ways as a common way of speaking. Because of its easy gait and recognizable script, the language became a favorite among those that like storytelling, songwriting, and long journeys across the ocean for common folk. The Halfling language has a large presence around coastal areas, port towns, and islands because of its popularity with sailors and merchants alike due to simplicity over flowery form.   The advantages of speaking this language are that in areas where the Common language is not understood or used there is still a chance that Halfling has spread to that area, this comes in especially handy in shipwreck scenarios. Speaking this language will usually identify you as a farmer, merchant, or sailor and people are less likely to consider you an immediate threat because few societies actually see Halflings as a credible threat, so you become much more amicable by association. There are no particular disadvantages to this language except that in areas where Humans and Halflings cohabitate the same area many misunderstandings have emerged over written communication due to shared letters and numbers that have different meanings.

I really like that speaking Halfling will make you seem less threatening.
