Body Modification

Human beings are incredibly modifyable in modern times. While visits to clinics are still required for nearly anything except basic shifts, a lot can be done without surgical equipment, give time. After proper programming, the nanites in the body of most people can be set to move fat around, build up or tear down muscle or cartiledge, or even genetic changes, though these are heavily controlled to prevent irreversible damage. However, this isnt the extent of changes. A person can easily make themselves look however they want, and given time, can even transition genders, or have something designed that is not baseline human. While the militaries use this to buff up their soldiers with mods, some extreme groups go far further. Existing in the oceans of earth are people who have become whales, dolphins, or even mermaids. In space, humans have had themselves spliced into a ship to act as the AI, though they are not as effective as a mind. The human shape is plastic.
There are a fair few limitations on the available shapes for a human. Typically, they cannot be smaller than 30-35 kg. They must have some way to imbibe enough nutrients and energy for the human brain to function, though this can be sumplemented by technology. In addition these changes require extensive medical equipment, as as such is only available in larger cities, and typically requires forethought and appointments.
Something smaller than this, like just changing skin colour, or simple fat distribution or muscle mass can be easily done with a home medical kit in just a week or so.
Changing gender with it takes a while, and does need some specialized medical equipment. It takes around 2 months for most obvious visible changes to take place, but functional equipment isnt around until 6 months in, and all changes are finished after 9 months. When switched, options can be taken to actually preserve a functional early stage pregnancy, though this is risky for that pregnancy, with around 20% terminating after a year. As such, most people just artificially fertalize, then transplant the ovum when they switch back. Either way, artificial wombs make actual human carrying to term unnecessary, though many continue to do it.
