Wing Rot
Wing Rot is a fungal infection that only occurs in the deeper caverns where the humidity is high enough for the fungus to survive. While this fungus is capable of infecting all Martians Wing Rot is commonly seen in the Deep Cave.
Transmission & Vectors
Wing Rot is transmitted by the spores of the fungus that causes the infection. It does not hop from individual to individual. It is primarily found on those with wings who have spend a significant amount of time underground.
Causes
It is caused by fungal spores finding an open wound on a Martian's wing membrane. Due to the thinness of the wing membrane the fungus is able to take hold without being killed by the immune system. Most wing injuries heal slowly making Wing Rot particularly dangerous if not treated quickly.
Symptoms
Wing Rot causes and infection in the wing membrane that is causes the flesh to die and begin to decay. Wing Rot is typified by a foul smell and the blackening of the flesh.
Treatment
Many mild cases of Wing Rot are easily treated by simply returning to the surface of Mars and increasing sun exposure. The fungus thrives in a moist environment and dies quickly in dry conditions. For Deep Cave Martians this option in not a viable treatment because they live so deep under the surface. It can also be treated with a medication (to be created). More serious cases may require the removal of the dead and decaying flesh and a longer term therapy regimen.
Prognosis
If treated quickly Wing Rot is non-lethal and the infected individual will make a full recovery. Long term cases can result in the permanent disfigurement or impairment of one's wings.
Affected Groups
Wing Rot only affects the wings of Martians as it is the only area where the membrane is thin and slow enough to repair to give the fungus a foot hold. Martians with injuries that result in poor circulation to a limb may get Wing Rot if a cut gets infected.
Prevention
Wing Rot is easily prevented by cleaning wounds regularly and keeping them covered when in damp caves.
