Val-Shavel

A ritualistic journey undertaken by Martian people in search of the Ashavas fruit. Due the harsh nature of the planet and specifically the region where the plant grows, the Val-Shavel usually ends in the death of those who undertake the journey.

Components and tools

Due to the diversity of the different Martian ethnicities that use this ritual there are differences in what participants are allowed to bring. All variants forbid the help of others and the use of pack animals to bring extra supplies. The General Surface and Upper Caves usually allow individuals to bring a personal mount if they already own one. In general Martians are allowed to bring basic survival supplies and weapons for defense. In some areas if the individual is a criminal they are sent out with only a water skin and a dagger.

Participants

While the only participant in the ritual is the traveler, the beginning of the journey is usually attended by a local authority figure and a crowd of unofficial observers.

Observance

The Val-Shavel can be undertaken at anytime although voluntary participants usually wait until favorable conditions are present.
