The Whisperstone Ruins

At the foot of the windswept Windhaage in the Sulnar valley lie the Whisperstone Ruins. Amidst mighty trees and meadows they stand, old and menacing. The river Sulnar passes through the ruins, still a small stream at this point. A few bridges cross over it, most of them broken and shaken. The explorer can feel the loneliness of the place, a sense of unwelcome nagging at the back of the head.   Who built this abandoned city is unknown. They left behind very little that is not lost to time and the forces of nature. Sometimes a brave adventurer dares the ruins and uncovers rooms not seen for hundreds of years. And occasionally he finds some treasure, books or antique items. More often than not, he is never heard of again.   The name of the ruins comes from the winds passing through the broken towers. They seem to carry whispered voices full of warnings, trying to tell a story. But up to this point no has deciphered their saying. Many say it is a natural phenomenon caused by the passing of air, others think those whisperings are the voices of the dead.   Few explorers enter the Whisperstone Ruins. Those who dare do not find any danger above and beyond that of the wild area surrounding the ruins. A few wild animals have carved out their territory, and some stranger beasts roam the blasted stone buildings. Entering the buildings is another thing. There are reports of shadowy figures lurking in the corners, of vanished fellow explorers. Some books recovered by the most daring intruders hint at some kind of undercity or perhaps a complex of interconnected cellars and hallways. Perhaps these depths hold well preserved treasures and knowledge what kind of disaster has befallen this once so mighty city.
