Wafula Pterosaurs (waf-ula teh-ruh-sor)

This was inspired by the World Anvil Summer Camp of 2021. This is for the article: A Species of Working Animal

Wafula Pterosaurs are a flying dinosaur species native to the eastern side of the Walfa Mountains. Nowadays they are rarely found in the wild. This is due to the Frogmen of the Beast Clan. They seek out the eggs to remove the wild ones from the area and add diversity to their breeding population.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Wafula Pterosaurs are adapted to flying and swimming. Their bones are hollow and filled with air. Their brains are quite large allowing for social structures. Their wings are made of a membrane of skin. Each membrane are attached to extremely long finger bones. They have 2 long wings, 2 short legs and one long tail. The wings allow for complex flying maneuvers and great flying speeds.

Genetics and Reproduction

Breeding season typically last 2 weeks in the spring. Wafula Pterosaurs tend to lay between 3 and 5 eggs during a breeding season. Wafula Pterosaurs grow rapidly obtaining adulthood in 2 years. Nesting on the cliffs of the Walfa Mountains. The eggs are watched over by the female for 9 months until they hatch. For the next 2 years the parents will cooperatively care for the hatchlings until they reach adulthood.   Their Colorful Crest's play an important part in choosing a mate. The females pick the most colorful or fastest members of the species. The males often hold races to compete for mates. Once a mate is chosen they Mate for life.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Wafula Pterosaurs are carnivores. They typically feed on fish, giant insects, and giant spiders.   Wafula Pterosaurs hunt during the day by diving onto their prey. Flying high into the sky using their eyesight to spot prey on the ground or in the sea close to the surface. When they spot their prey they fold their wings nose diving with speeds reaching over 200 mph.

Additional Information

Domestication

The Frogmen of the Beast Clan had originally domesticated them. Wafula Pterosaurs are a predatory species. This makes them quite difficult to domesticate. They train them from hatchlings making domestication easier. Domestication makes them quite docile as long as they are well-fed.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Wafula Pterosaurs are powerful flying mounts trained by the Frogmen of the Beast Clan. Training one requires special training that lasts 3 months. They make up the military air power in the nations of the United Commonwealth Council of The Darkswamps and the United Barak Pirate Council .
