TOLANA BOTANICAL GARDENS

The Tolana Botanical Gardens are nature preserves located throughout the Tolana planets. The Tolana value nature above all other cultural elements. Recognizing that the harmonious balance of their planets relies on the ability of nature to thrive, the Tolana set up public garden throughout urban centers, while also designating several rural areas as protected nature reserves. Many Tolana vacation at these preserves. The Chamber scholars often walk the gardens to contemplate major decisions to be made, walking alone or in pairs, but always silent. There is very little noise or talking in the public gardens, except for the natural sounds of nature.
The Grand Eminence and royal family have their own gardens, ones they meticulously and carefully maintain within their own clan. They will at times invite visitors for a stroll, and discuss matters of private conversation away from the earshot of other clan members or politicians.
Each clan also maintains their own home gardens, taking pride in growing different types of flora and fauna. Many of the flowers have symbolic meanings in Tolana culture. They are given as gifts during a celebration, to a strong partner or clanmate, and to mark a clan moving up in status. Children are walked through the gardens and explained the significance of each plant. They are also taught to care for them, and on their 5th birthday, receive their own to care for. Family gardens are very personal and private, with visitors usually not welcome.
Purples, pinks, and blues are the most common hues of Tolana flora and fauna. The stems are a mixture of greens and blues. The most brilliant flowers in the wildest part of rural preserves have petals of silver. They are very revered and rare, but no one would dare pick a flower to relocate it. To do is so to face immediate trial, bringing shame to a family and consequences ranging from hefty fines to exile from the planet.
