Famine

Earth's population grew, and feeding a growing population became more and more challenging as environmental resources sustained damages. Countries were unable to produce the food needed to feed their populations. Rice and flour became the most traded resources, with people beginning to experience deficiencies from lack of vitamins and minerals from fruit, vegetables, and protein sources. Conflict over the limited resources caused widespread poverty, war, and famine. Millions died, countries fell, and globally, people became increasingly on their own, their governments unable to provide any assistance.
In the United States, resources became so scarce that healthcare began to be delivered in a tiered system based on those that could pay, intensifying the already long-existing gap in resources for the most disenfranchised and most vulnerable. Many physicians, morally objecting to this model, left for rural communities and cities, providing door-to-door healthcare as best they could. They trained others to assist them, doing their best to fill in the gaps and combat the effects of the widespread famine and pollution that was damaging the health of everyone.   First contact came when the Tolana invaded Earth in 2145, Earth quickly falling and surrendering due to the lack of centralized effort to fight the attack and the already crumbling resources on the planet. The Tolana saw Earth as a supply of labor and manpower for the military. They set up Mech factories in countries all over the planet and began demanding military tributes. Seeing the emaciated population and failing climate, they developed packs, daily bricks of food that humans could eat three times a day that would develop complete nutrition. The Tolana eat similar products when at war for efficiency and convenience, so they adapted it to the human diet. The bricks saved many from starvation but left humans with a longing for fresh food and a better daily life. Feelings towards the Tolana remain mixed, some grateful for work and food, other resentful of the imperialist mode, and sacrifice of many to the military.
