Deimos, Phobos, and Ursa Major

As Martians settled and developed their settlement, people from the Earth Alliance for Space Travel- the United States, The European Space Agency, and South Korea- began to populate the settlement. Initially, since the reproduction of people on Mars (fertility, labor) was impossible, each country sent a steady supply of scientists, essential workers, and, eventually, families. But, once reproduction was solved and Martians could reproduce, the Alliance felt the need to establish a stronger Martian identity.     The technocracy in place recognized the need to form one unique identity. People would work more effectively and morale would improve through various policies. Translation devices took care of any language barriers. The development of agriculture allowed many new Martians to eat fresh produce for the first time. Collaborative structures in all workplaces motivated people to work across previous work barriers of country and culture.   The social scientist on the technocracy council proposed the development of holidays. Holidays are sources of national pride in many countries, and often one of the elements cited as most missed. The technocratic council rejected the idea of adopting any Earth holidays from any culture, which they worried would stoke feelings of homesickness, isolation, and also form bonds between those from the same country. Instead, the council proposed a new slate of holidays, starting with a Lunar Festival celebrating Deimos and Phobos, the two moons of Mars.   Deimos and Phobos run close to each other, giving the appearance of chasing each other across the sky. Many Martians discuss, upon entry, the awe they feel when gazing upon two moons, moons that move more rapidly than they expect. Using this as a symbol of change, progress, and deference to space, the Martians developed a Lunar Festival, marked on the Deimos and Phobos cross paths. Continuing to build on the success, they also celebrate Ursa Major, the “superior” constellation in a veiled but not-so-veiled attempt at asserting superiority to Earth. The She-bear began appearing on uniforms, logos, and, eventually, the Martian Independence flag.
