Prayer House
Purpose / Function
People congregate here to pray, ask forgiveness, seek repentance,give thanks to their Maker.
Architecture
They are fairly new, considering religion was much different before al-Ilaj. These prayer houses are open courtyards. They have communal cleansing areas - giant basins filled with water for ritual cleansing before praying. People pray away from these stone basins. There are separate, sheltered rooms for private reflection. There are also open spaces for people to pray in - courtyards. Of course, it also depends on how wealthy the area these prayer houses are in. Some around the villages are just tiny rooms, with a small jug of water used for cleansing.
