Many languages were spoken troughout the long history of Illangar. Illangarian scholars mostly use three ways to categorise them. The first being genetical, whether two languages descend from a common ancestor. Thus for example Daulerim and Illodzin both are genetically related, while Emat is unrelated to them. The second factor is areal affiliation. For example Emat has influenced Daulerim to a great deal, but not so much Illodzin. The third category is unique, in that it is a false category, race or species. The terms human language or elven language are widespread, but they are a false classification. These languages are not limited to their respective namesake, nor should they imply a true genetic relation. The only cases in which they apply are in contrast to languages inherently different, like those of the Koiloks.
