Personal history
Born the youngest son of a middle class family in Sindar, Bexley’s arcane abilities were quickly recognised and nurtured. He was sworn in to the school of the Amber Circle and trained with various mages as part of a collective, it was during this period his outstanding ability as a fire evoker was discovered. Towards the end of his training he had already mastered several powerful fire spells. It was around this time that the War for Lefryn, led by King Wolfsbane, against the rebels began.
Bexley and his older brother Markus, his only sibling, both joined the royal army to help fight the rebels. Due to his arcane ability, Bexley was fast tracked to an Officer and assigned to the Fire Tempest Company, commanded by the hardass Captain Tona Criid. Markus, however, was assigned to frontline infantry, a duty he took great pride in. Serving as a Lieutenant and second in-command of the Fire Tempests, Bexley played a pivotal role in establishing the Tempests as one most brutally efficient arcane artillery units - “Fire is Always the Answer” became the unofficial slogan of the company.
During a late-night raid on a small rebel encampment near Sandwall in the final few days of the war, Captain Criid gave the order to burn the rebels out of their hiding place so that an infantry division could finish them off. On Criids orders, Lieutenant Reed and the other Tempests began to cast and fire rained down on the encampment. This should have been a standard operation. However, due to miscommunication, the infantry division had already started their assault when the fire started to land. Unable to communicate with the Tempests, the infantry had to withstand the full barrage of the fire attack. The mission was technically a success: the encampment destroyed and the rebels killed. It wasn’t until after the war had ended and Bexley’s service term had finished that he found out that not only were the rebels killed but also the friendly infantry division. Glancing over the list of friendly casualties, one name stood out: Markus, his brother. Bexley had killed his brother.
Racked with guilt and sorrow, Bexley destroyed his spell book and tried to cut himself off from magic. During this time he travelled to Sandwall and made a grave for Markus at the site of the old encampment. He lived in Sandwall for several years before returning to Sindar. During his time in Sandwall he lived and learned from the people he called enemy a few years ago. He realised they were just people, living their lives the best they could. On returning to Sindar, his magic started to return to him. Wanting to use it to help, he vowed to only use magic in violence as a last resort. Bexley made another spell book, slept and woke in a new land, the Blue Water Inn in Barovia.
