Luruwar Condition in Ikaharin | World Anvil

Luruwar ('lu.ɾu:.aɾ)

''It is in moments like these when we are reminded of the cruel nature of Divinity...''
Luruwar is a disorder (almost) exclusively found among communities that practice some form of Ikaharinese Religion. Furthermore, it is both completely untreatable, mysterious and terrifying for the people of the land.

About the ailment

Cause

''-Erur, please, we beg you! Let the Lord of a Thousand Visions be informed of our plight! Let him judge our case and may him help us overcome the hardships of life!   -The pleas of slaves are of little interest to Him, yet I shall be merciful and let you drink the eici''.
-shamanic ceremony
This condition is caused by an excessive accumulation of a certain chemical in the body, which causes irreversible damage to the nervous tissue. Luckily, the culprit of the ailment is fairly uncommon and isn't found on anything humans should have regular contact with.   There is, however, one way for people to consume this compound, the Eici Hadei. The central element of this ceremony is the drinking of a beverage called eici, which is made by mixing animal blood and a special powder (one rich in that toxic substance).

Symptoms and degrees

First degree

''It's just cold, honey, nothing to worry about''.
In its mildest form, luruwar presents itself as occasional shaking/shivering and short-term memory loss. As the chemical eventually bonds with other molecules should a person stop partaking in eici ceremonies when first symptoms appear, it won't get any worse.

Second degree

''Would you mind talking a bit louder? I can't hear you...''
Should the affected keep consuming the shamanic beverage, their senses will start to deteriorate and maybe even cease to work at times. Many people also start having trouble keeping themselves upright and maintaining coherent conversations.   By this point, most realize the condition is, indeed, luruwar and stop drinking. Though a few don't connect the dots...

Third degree

''...''
The few who won't let their symptoms stand on the way of some good ol' blood-drinking will eventually reach the most severe degree. At this point, the nervous tissue is so affected the victim is essentially disconnected from reality.   Patients essentially become vegetables, unable to move, talk or even see. All people who reach this stage end up dying, though not necessarily due to the ailment.

Social perception

A divine curse

''He is much like people, really. If you ask nicely, He may give you something for free. If you ask Him fifty times for free stuff, He won't be happy''.
-person explaining the nature of Yrain
As the Ikaharinese are very aware of the connection between partaking in the Eici Balei, a sacred ceremony, and developing this disorder, they conclude that the ailment must be of supernatural origin.   Furthermore, as the goal of the Eici Balei is to get good luck from the god Yrain (without giving Him anything), they believe the condition is caused by Him getting tired of the believer's constant pestering and cursing them.

Kurhanneol

''You idiot! Did you seriously believe Yrain would like your constant pestering? You definitely deserve His curse! You deserve being a fucking vegetable! Even my newborn is more useful than you...''
-person insulting a terminal patient
By far the most popular opinion is that the affected deserve it.
